You can't ruin his mood, he's watching Smallville re-runs right now.
 there's a blast from the past.

I'm a fan of animated films. There has been a steady stream of garbage for awhile now in that genre with a few rare diversions that were not within miles of what Pixar used to do. Frozen was better than most of the recent stuff but not close to a handful of Disney classics nor Pixar before ratatouille.

Just watched Glory.....again. Found it on blu-ray cheap and yeah, had to buy it. All time great movie. All time great movie. All time great movie. Did I mention how good this movie is? Ferris Bueller is really good and then Denzel Washington before he was famous is awesome. Morgan Freeman is, well, its fucking Morgan fucking Freeman, gotta ask?...

Fan of Hayao Miyazaki's work? Also if you're into this kind of thing, Avatar the Nickelodeon show is actually pretty damn good IMO.

Edit: Also, Big Hero 6 was pretty good if you've never checked it out. Also Wreck-It-Ralph. To add to your list of recently good animated movies. And not sure if you're counting Toy Story 3 or Wall-E in your above timeframe, oh and both How to Train Your Dragon films and the Lego Movie (although you did say some outliers that were good). Fantastic Mr. Fox too. There's been a good amount of pretty damn good animated movies come out in the past 5 years or so IMO.

It's not a coincidence that Pixar started releasing crap after being bought by Disney.

F that movie! Not because it isn't great (it is), but because when we deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm they sent us over on a chartered 747. Of course the crew went ahead and showed the films (since they wouldn't let us off the damn plane in any of the airports we landed at to refuel). The last flick they showed was Glory. Right after the ending (where they all freakin' die) the pilot announced we were about to make our final approach into Riyadh...we were all expecting to go into combat within days.

So it seems my timetable is off. Cars was fun but a bit formula, then came Ratatouille (I realize I'm in the minority for not enjoying that). Pixar had released so many classics before that (ok, Bug's Life was just solid but still quite creative).

After that, the whole genre seemed to slip (the non-pixar flicks are slipping my mind), though Pixar produced 3 all-timers first (Wall-E, Up and Toy Story 3). Then we had Tangled :so:, Cars 2 :roll1: Brave (alright), Monsters U, Planes :roll2:, Frozen, another Planes (seriously?), etc.

There has not been a sustained drought of good flicks but Pixar/Disney sold out, allowing everyone else to lower their game and put out a lot of cookie cutter garbage instead of achieving greatness.

I didn't enjoy Frozen as much as Disney bringing back the musical animation genre. It wasn't close to Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, etc but was decent on par with Pocahontas (as long as you don't have kids that drive you crazy playing it to death).

I have not seen big hero 6 yet. Mr Fox, Ralph, Dragons, Despicable Me were good. I enjoyed the creativity of Meatballs though the characters were a bit annoying. I loved Lego though I wasn't sure how to classify that (it also was an adult flick that appealed to kids, in my imo).

I think you'll enjoy big hero 6,and just came out recently I believe. I'm also not sure if you'd like hayao miyazaki films. Nothing like US animated films. But the creativity and artistry will have you coming back for more and more. My neighbor totoro may be may favorite, but there's too many great pieces to list.
