I think Nolan did a huge service to film makers that have aspirations of dabbling in the Batman universe by leaving the ending open the way he did. Nolan's trilogy is almost unarguably canon when it comes to Batman on film now, at least in popular culture.

Wrapping up Bruce Wayne's story in its entirety means that nobody can touch "Batman" in that universe without going one of the many alternate routes, but fortunately there ARE many alternate routes that could be taken that would be fresh and entertaining.

I would LOVE to see JGL as Nightwing, although I know it will never happen.

If they could cast it correctly, the only thing untouched that NEEDS to be done is a film version of The Dark Knight Returns. Maybe in 10 years when Bale is even older the two of them can get together again and give an encore.
