OSU women can't rally from 21-point deficit

Associated Press

Tuesday, March 06, 2007
INDIANAPOLIS ? Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 12 Purdue upset No. 5 Ohio State, 64-52, Monday night to win the Big Ten women's basketball tournament championship.
While Big Ten player of the year Jessica Davenport finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, the Buckeyes (28-3) always seemed a step behind Purdue and lost for only the second time in 23 games.

We mustn't underestimate the role that Hoskins played. I think, without her, the ladies will be fortunate to make it to the Sweet 16. Losing in the tournament was a blessing because they are banged up and need the rest. They will still be a #2 seed, I think.

Buckeye women fall flat in losing title
Tuesday, March 6, 2007

Ohio State expended too much energy getting to the Big Ten basketball tournament final to win the championship.

The fifth-ranked Buckeyes, drained after an overtime win over Penn State in Sunday's semifinals, lost 64-52 to No. 12 Purdue in the final Monday night.

Ohio State fell behind Purdue 21-0 and didn't make a field goal for more than 10 minutes to start the game. Jessica Davenport finally made Ohio State's first basket with 9:36 left in the first half after the Buckeyes missed their first 13 shots.

I really feel sorry for the girls. It looked like they took a knife to a gunfight. Or, a gun with only one bullet. I hate to see the year finish that way, but, hopefully they can recover as they have earlier after LSU and MSU. With the injuries though, it just looks like they're short on weapons. Really too bad after an excellent season!

Ohio State?s Jessica Davenport shoots over Purdue?s Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton during the second half.

INDIANAPOLIS ? For the first eight minutes of the Big Ten tournament championship game last night in Conseco Fieldhouse, the Ohio State women?s basketball team played as if it had just arrived in Indiana following a red-eye flight from Hong Kong.
The regular-season conference champion hit the court against the second-seeded Purdue Boilermakers with the kind of splat that normally requires a pumpkin and a 10-story building. During those eight frightful minutes, Ohio State (28-3) missed its first 13 shots and fell behind 21-0. The deficit, added to a lethal dose of Boilermaker stars Katie Gearlds and Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton, led to a 64-52 loss by the Buckeyes, handing Purdue the automatic conference bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Rough game for the team. They got hammered on the boards during the 21-0 opening.

Stacey Dales says a #3 seed? Maybe, but her saying that Oklahoma should be a #2, when tOSU has the better record and won at their place, reeks of Big 12 homerism.

From Wikipedia (I promise I didn't change anything):

Stacey Dales (born September 5, 1979 in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada) is a basketball player for the Chicago Sky of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She also serves as a men's and women's college basketball analyst College GameNight where when she talks she is ignored by Digger Phelps and Rece Davis

I feel sorry for Brandie and Jessica. If Brandie doesnt get hurt we have a much better chance to score from the outside and the inside game gets a lot more easy chances. With Brandie out Jess is getting double and triple teamed, still to no avail, but its going to be nearly impossible for Jessica to put them on her back and win this tournament. The girls better find a shooting stroke very quickly and Star Allen needs to step up big in support.

It was hard watching that first 10 minutes yesterday but I definitely came away impressed with how well our girls fought back and Purdue's poise down the stretch when we made our runs. Purdue will upset someone in this tournament shooting the way they were yesterday. Gearlds was just unstoppable and it was very impressive to watch.

Maybe someone who follows the team a little closer than I do can explain to me why Foster has not recruited someone who is a consistent outside shooter. They really have not had an outside threat for the past couple years. I know that Packer and Hoskins, before her injury, can occasionally hit the outside jumper but they are not what I call a consistent outside threat. I really thought that Moeller was going to be the answer after all the things that I read about her after she committed. I will agree that he is a consummate pg but her outside shooting is lacking.

I know that they have a girl from Illinois coming in next year who is supposed to be pretty good but unfortunately that will be to late for Jessica. I know that Foster is supposed to be a pretty good coach but he has never taken a team deep into the tournament even when he was at Vanderbilt. I just think that he has wasted a golden opportunity to get somewhere when he has a post player like Davenport but has no one to take some of the pressure off of her.
