STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? For too many years, the Bryce Jordan Center loomed as menacingly as a Halloween house of horrors for the Ohio State women?s basketball team.
Twice now, however, in the past two seasons, the Buckeyes have managed to withstand the scare and pull out a thrilling last-second Big Ten victory against Penn State on its home court. Freshman Andrea Walker hit two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining last night to lift the sixth-ranked Buckeyes (14-1, 3-0) to a 63-61 victory over the Lions (8-10, 1-4) in front of 4,649 fans.

They struggled against Penn St. last night also. They look strong at times but real bad at others. Davenport had a real bad game. The Lady Bucks kept getting beat down the court by the Penn State center. They didn't look like a top 10 team, IMO. Maybe that's a bad game to judge them by.

Ohio State sophomore Star Allen would beg to differ. After the sixth-ranked Buckeyes (14-1, 3-0) withstood a 63-61 cliffhanger at Penn State, Allen laughed when asked whether she enjoyed the experience.

The two passes occurred within 35 seconds and, taken together, helped explain how the Ohio State women?s basketball team turned a tailgating Northwestern outfit into a purple dot in the rearview mirror yesterday afternoon in Value City Arena. Nursing a four-point lead after 12 minutes of the Big Ten encounter with the Wildcats (6-12, 0-5), the Buckeyes (15-1, 4-0) accelerated as soon as star center Jessica Davenport assumed a supporting role.
