KyLLLLLe KaLLLLLis (traitor with a platinum sombrero)

There is a reason RR pushed so hard to fill up classes before they started playing.

Hoke is recruiting much better than RR, but Strobel and Kalis were sold by OSU negativity. I don't fault them for it, but we won't know much about Hoke until a few years from now.

Most good recruiters have a honeymoon period. it is how they handle the leveling off that separates them. Even RR had plenty of momentum when he was first hired. He just decided to use that on the wrong prospects.

As for oh8ch reminding us to be negative,

Hard to blame Fickell at this point when Smith gave him so little support at the press conference.:(

He has yet to win more than .500 of his head coaching games. Interesting to see how well he holds this together if he doesnt have wins soon.
Right, but that was at Ball State (among the worst funded programs in D-1) and San Diego State (a school that averages 1 bowl game every 10 years).

You're right though, plain and simple, he needs to win now at Michigan. It will be a disappointment if he doesn't make it to a bowl game in his first year.

Certainly not all, but a lot of the UM faithful were disappointed when he was hired. I don't think it would take much for them to come back out of the woodwork. I don't know much about the UM roster, but other than Denard, Martin, and a few other players, I don't think he has much to work with.

Particularly given the fact that 70 of the 120 D1 schools get to go bowling, and there are several (Southern Cal, Ohio State?, UNC?, Tennessee?) regular participants who might be otherwise engaged during the post season.

On the bright side- The GMAC Bowl has "Bowl" in it...

Shaping up with kids who, regardless of what is going on, want to be Buckeyes and will be Buckeyes until they die.

Yes, agree... Shaping up nicely.

I am sure Kent State fans hold the same feeling towards the guys that commit to them.

Yeah, yeah, OSU makes 2*'s into 5*'s. And I get your point about kids who WANT to be at OSU. But just having kids who want to be there isn't enough.

We all know the teams that get the better talent out of hs do the best. Losing Kalis & Dodson (though he didn't commit to us first) hurts - even more so since we need great tackles to go with last year's guard/center class. Losing BD would make it even worse.

agree......whatever Smith's strengths are remain to be seen.....his press conferences are weak and his level of enthusiasm sure doesn't seem to be high

I perhaps didn't make my point clear. Let me try to be more explicit:

1) Things suck. There is no taking away from that.
2) We are the Ohio State University. Suck will pass.
3) While the suck continues we are better off with kids who really want to be Buckeyes. They will form the foundation of the program's spirit going forward.
4) Suck will pass.
5) That all said, find me some Olinemen. I agree, this one going away is not good... But others will come around... And we may see this one come around again too. I doubt he will... But if I have a concern that pushes me to the edge it's the number of oline offers we have out there.

If I was a highly rated recruit there is no way I would verbally commit to Ohio State right now. As much as you are advised by your coaches and even the NCAA literature not to commit based on a head coach or position coach I want to have some level of confidence that at least the head coach will be in place. Without that in place there could be a totally different staff that might not fit your talents.

If my heart was at Ohio State I would hold off as long as possible before commiting if possible. There are multiple good/valid reasons to commiting to a school before your Sr. season starts so I can't blame the kids that are opeing up their recruitment.

I actually expect Hoke to give Kalis a hard sell this weekend. If Kalis doesn't commit, we may not have room. Michigan is running out of scholarships for offensive linemen. It'll be interesting to see whether he commits this weekend.

UM will take Kalis regardless. He is that good. You accept his verbal and find room later.

The longer things go for kids like Washington, Kalis, McMullen, etc. the better OSU's chances. If they wait it out until the end, the NCAA's decision on OSU should be handed down and the permanent coaching situation resolved. Barring post-season bans beyond 2011, OSU should be able to put together a respectable class...top half of the Big 10 at worst. And then it's on to kids like Mathie, Burrows, Price, Smith, etc.
