Keon Keeley (DL Alabama)

The Inside Scoop: Two teams have risen to the top for 5-star Keon Keeley

At the time, the Buckeyes were thought to be running in third, with Alabama out in front and Florida not too far behind. But after two visits in the past three weeks, including an unofficial visit this past weekend, Ohio State has cemented itself as a very legitimate contender to land the nation’s No. 1 EDGE.

“That traction is not slowing down, based on what I’m hearing. A great source said it was an ‘excellent visit to Ohio State,” On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons said Monday during the Inside Scoop recruiting show. “Up there with the family, Keon spent time with other recruits, some players at Ohio State, and of course he spent a good of time with Larry Johnson, the defensive line coach there under Ryan Day. And that’s the key here. Larry Johnson, his history and resume, they’re comparing to Chase Young. Can he be the next No. 1 pick on the defensive front to come out of Ohio State?

…Based on what I’m hearing, Keon really likes what he hears. He’s buying what Johnson is saying and what Ryan Day is saying, and the family is as well.”

Ohio State rising, Florida falling back with Keon Keeley

What was a three-team race now is shaping up to a battle between the SEC and Big Ten’s premier programs over the past decade. Keeley visited the Crimson Tide in late July unofficially before backing off his Notre Dame pledge.

He’s set to return to Tuscaloosa in two weeks when Alabama hosts Texas A&M, and a decision could come not too far after that.

And while the Buckeyes have made a massive impression on Keeley, Simmons adds that nothing is likely imminent with his decision.

“One source close to this told me it’s 50-50 right now at best between Alabama and Ohio State, not Florida,” he added. “So the in-state school seems to be losing some traction, and I would probably if I had to give one school the edge I’d lean toward Ohio State. But again, he’s been there twice. He has the Alabama official visit coming up early next month, and I don’t think any decision will be made until he takes that OV to Alabama.”

The Dean had a mostly positive review of his visit.
I’m at liberty to summarize since I read this on another boards non-premium board.

OSU feels we have made a move.
His mom digs the culture.
But there is an uncle involved in the decision, he will visit Bama, and NIL will be a factor.

You know how in some games they say “whoever has the ball last wins”?

I think this recruitment will go down to the wire and whoever gets the last NIL offer/visit/touch will sign him.

Kids these days...jk, hilarious and I would have done the same thing. Seems we are sitting in really good position here, Keon is likely going to take his visits but we'll keep up the full court press. I think a big thing with the DE recruiting and a "slow start" was kids doubting if LJ Sr would be around to coach him. From all the interviews and videos I have seen of LJ Sr, he looks nowhere ready to retire and is adamant he doesn't plan on it any time soon. We'll see if that holds up but I tend to believe he has another 2-3 years at least here and I think the recruits are buying into that as well.

I think the 1 year contract needs to be mentioned. LJ may be trying to maximize salary but I also see him being done as a full time coach soon. Maybe he does part time, who knows

Ohio State said Knowles has signed a three-year deal, paying him $1.9 million a year. Knowles will officially become the defensive coordinator on January 2, 2022.
Sometimes to steal an assistant from another school Ohio State will give him a multi year contract, like above ; (obviously there are exceptions) but, it is my understanding that colleges typically just give assistant football coaches a 1 year contract. A 1 year contract for an assistant football coach should not be considered that big of deal, i.e. does not imply that he is planning on retiring.

Good to know, I honestly had no idea what the longevity of an assistant's contract typically is. I think with LJ Sr if he has a 1 year contract, most recruits would note his age and how long he has been coaching, and might read into that more than a 45 year old assistant that gets a 1 year contract. To be perfectly candid, LJ Sr has coached longer here than I thought he would, so I am just considering each year he comes back full time to be gravy. But everything I have seen suggests he has 2-3 good years left in the tank, which helps with recruiting guys like Keon.
