K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

I'm sure most NFL teams would like to have Nuge. The question is who is going to be willing to use a 2nd round pick to get him?
I've thought that ever since the Buccaneers released Martin Gramatica, they would be the prime candidates to take Nuge, and they have a head coach who has proven he is willing to draft a PK high. The Bucs currently have Jay Taylor only, who they picked up via FA. Taylor is a fine kicker, who was 11/11 on XP and 4-5 on FG (all attempts 30+, with a long of 50). The problem for Taylor though is that 50 is about the limit of his range, even from a tee. The Bucs kickoff and field goal units were an absolute disaster this year and the primary culprit in their 5-11 season (Brian Griese aside). 8 of their 11 losses were by a TD or less, and all of us have seen under Tressel how much of a difference field position can make in those close wins/losses.

Taylor, for example, had 20 of his 21 kickoffs returned for an average of 25 yards with a TD surrendered in 5 games. Gramatica was just as bad. Opponents' avg starting field position was darn near the 35 all year long. The Bucs had the 2nd ranked total D in the NFC, giving up about 285 yards per game - the problem was other teams only needed to drive 40 yards for the game winning points.

The Bucs pick 5th, have no glaringly obvious need position, and this is one of the weakest drafts in recent memory. My guess is they trade down to the very bottom of the 1st round and take Nugent there or spend their 2nd round pick on him, especially if Edwards and Williams are both off the board.

Think they could have gotten an angle without Turano's ass in the shot?

Nugent Autograph

Mike Nugent was at the Great Lakes Mall today signing autographs. I took my boys (ages 10 and 8) there so that they could meet another member of the 2002 NC team, as well as one of the greatest kickers in OSU, if not NCAA, history.

A great young man, took his time, had exchanges with both of my boys ("Hey little buddy, you play football", "Wow, your big for 8. I bet you play on the line. Has Coach Tressel called you yet?"; that type of banter that kids love). He was sporting his NC ring and that big piece of jewelry got the boys' attention. Again, Nuge took the time to let them look at it from all sides/angles.

I asked him about being on target to graduate and he indicated it looks like end of Spring Quarter. When I congratulated him for that, he smiled broadly and said, "One final special memory in the 'Shoe." All-in-all, another class act that is leaving OSU and will be successful at the next level.
