K Josh Huston (official thread)

I still think I'd rather the Browns have Huston than Dawson. Phil might be a little more accurate from 40 in, but Josh has a bigger leg and has the potential to be a good kicker for a long time in the NFL. Someone just needs to give him a chance.

ALBANY, N.Y.: New York Giants kicker Josh Huston can't get away from caddying.
He caddied most of the summer at Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield course in Ohio, and he will do it again Monday night when the Super Bowl champions play the Cleveland Browns in a preseason game at Giants Stadium.
Huston got an emergency telephone call on Wednesday from the Giants, after kicker Lawrence Tynes was sidelined this week by a knee injury. Huston was then signed on Friday after winning a kicking competition at the University at Albany.
The former Ohio State placekicker, though, knows he has almost no chance of being the Giants' kicker this season.
"This is Lawrence's job," Huston said. "I am here to service these guys and give him an opportunity to rest up. It's a good opportunity for me to go there and get game film. Hopefully, someone else sees it."

Here's hoping he finally makes an NFL team.

Re: "I have been living at home in Columbus (Ohio), working out and actually caddying at Muirfield, waiting for a call so I could get an opportunity," Huston said.

The problem for the 26-year-old Huston is time. He has been trying to make an NFL team since 2006.
?I have been trying for a while and I?ve said if I don?t get something out of this year, then I am done,? Huston said. ?It?s not a situation where I am nervous. I?ll just go out there and have fun. That?s what you have to do.?
If he is lucky, he will kick well and someone will offer him a job.
If it doesn?t work out, Huston has a marketing degree and plans to find a job in Columbus?but not as a caddy.

New York Giants K Tynes faces knee surgery
by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
Thursday August 21, 2008

Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes, who suffered a left knee injury while making a routine kick during training camp and has been sidelined for almost two weeks, will undergo exploratory surgery tomorrow morning that will determine how much time he's expected to miss, according to three people with direct knowledge of Tynes' injury and scheduled procedure.

the Giants' best option to replace Tynes is Josh Huston, whom they signed last week when the realized Tynes wouldn't be ready to kick against the Browns on Monday. The 26-year-old Huston lost out to Tynes in a training-camp competition last year, though he did impress at times.

Huston made three of his four attempts last preseason, including a 50-yarder against the Ravens. His miss was a 42-yard attempt against the Jets. Against the Browns on Monday, the former Ohio State kicker had an extra point barely make it over the cross bar after it was tipped by a Cleveland defender. He later missed a 42-yard field goal attempt wide left.

There is one intriguing free-agent option: Jay Feely, who was recently cut by the Dolphins. Feely made 58 of 69 field-goal attempts for the Giants during the 2005 and '06 seasons. It seems unlikely the Giants would sign Feely, who was allowed to sign with Miami partly for the same reason the Dolphins and new team president Bill Parcells eventually cut him: personality conflicts.

And then there's former Colt and Cowboy Mike Vanderjagt, who played in the CFL this summer, as well as one-time Cowboy Billy Cundiff, who worked out for the Giants in Albany when they opted to re-sign Huston.

The Giants could also wait until final roster cutdowns in nine days and grab a veteran who's let go (Olindo Mare, Martin Gramatica, Dave Rayner or Aaron Elling, perhaps).

Then again, the Giants are hoping they won't have to call any of those players. They'll know for sure tomorrow morning when they get the results of Tynes' exploratory surgery.

For Josh Huston, it's a problem
BY Ralph Vacchiano
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Sunday, August 24th 2008

Josh Huston's performance Saturday night didn't leave Tom Coughlin feeling any better about the Giants' suddenly shaky kicking team.

Huston, signed last week when incumbent kicker Lawrence Tynes injured his left knee, missed his only attempt in the Giants' 10-7 loss to the Jets. He pushed a 42-yard kick wide right at the end of the first half.

Asked after the game to evaluate Huston, and if he was considering making another move at kicker, the coach said, "We will see. We will evaluate that."

With the season opener 11 days away, it's still not clear whether Tynes will be able to kick by then. He's been out two weeks since he slipped awkwardly on the wet grass in Albany and wrenched the knee on his plant leg.

Huston misses another kick for GiantsBY TOM ROCK | [email protected]

Josh Huston did little to assuage the Giants' concerns about their kicking game.

The replacement kicker who was signed to fill in for injured postseason hero Lawrence Tynes missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt in the final seconds of the second quarter, which kept the game scoreless at halftime.

Huston missed a 42-yard attempt Monday against the Browns, missing wide left.

If Tynes is unable to make the start of the season, the Giants might need to bring in a veteran kicker. Tynes, who kicked the overtime field goal in Green Bay in January that sent the Giants to the Super Bowl, twisted his left knee two weeks ago and has been sidelined since. He had exploratory arthroscopic surgery earlier this week, a procedure that revealed no structural damage.

The missed 42-yarder was made more difficult after Calvin Pace beat David Diehl and sacked Eli Manning for a 16-yard loss with 12 seconds remaining. That moved the line of scrimmage from the 7 to the 23 and helped squander a 13-play drive that started at the Giants' 13.

It seems like Josh had already made up his mind that he was done with football before the Giants called him. He never got his mind to where it needed to be to make routine kicks.

Good luck with whatever else you decide to do Josh.

Not sure if Huston's comments about Big Ben came up in an NFL thread about Roethlisberger...? It definitely affirms Ben's attitude and how it may have lead him to the trouble he got in:
Huston said he rarely spent time with Roethlisberger because he did not like his swagger, trash talk and competitiveness beyond sports.
?I think he felt like he needed more respect than what he got off the field for being a good athlete,? Huston said in a telephone interview.
