K Josh Huston (official thread)

RISING HUSTON GETS A LEG UP
By PAUL SCHWARTZ
August 21, 2007 -- ALBANY - The way Josh Huston figures it, his performance went a long way in alerting those around him what he?s all about. He believes he already knows he has the goods to be an NFL kicker.

Huston on Sunday night attempted his first two NFL field goals, hitting from 50 and 30 yards in the Giants? 13-12 preseason victory over the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. Locked in a training camp battle with veteran Lawrence Tynes, Huston understands there?s little margin for error, and for at least one important evening he did not have a single slip-up.

?I didn?t hurt myself,? Huston said afterward.

?He certainly helped himself,? Tom Coughlin surmised.

Tynes heading into camp had to be considered the favorite in this kicking derby based on his three years with the Chiefs and the fact that the Giants sent a conditional draft pick to Kansas City to get him. Neither has been lights-out during camp, but Huston took a step forward with a strong showing in Baltimore.

?I guess you?re at this level, you know you have it,? the 25-year-old Huston said. ?I?m not out there searching for confidence, I?m out there to prove what I can do. I?m trying to give the coaches and the front office confidence, not necessarily me.?

The way the assignment was split, Tynes played the first half against the Ravens, Huston the second. All Tynes got was one kickoff (he got the ball to the Ravens? 4-yard line) and one extra point. Huston was busier. With the Giants leading 7-6, Huston with 12:42 remaining was asked to nail a 50-yard field goal. His two kickoffs also sailed two-yards deep into the end zone with the desired four-second hang time.

?It?s fun,? said Huston, who sat behind Mike Nugent at Ohio State before finally getting his shot in an extra year of eligibility. ?You go out there and do your job, you get a little recognition from your teammates, which ultimately I want these guys to approve of what I?m doing. I keep making field goals and they will.?

Everybody who thought Nugent and Huston would both be NFL kickers booming touchbacks and knocking down 50-yarders after their abysmal rotation in 2001 when every point-after was an adventure, raise your hand!

I wish 1460TheFan had an archive of old call-in shows. I would love to hear all those old phone-calls again complaining about how JT was a terrible coach that was in over his head at the D1A level. :tongue2:

Earlier in camp, Josh Huston had a chance to win an extra hour of curfew for the defense in a field-goal contest against Lawrence Tynes, who was kicking for the offense.

Huston lost. That couldn't have helped his standing with his teammates.

On Sunday, Huston made field goals of 50 and 30 yards in a 13-12 win over the Ravens. He believes that helped his reputation in the locker room.

"You go out there and do your job, you get a little recognition from your teammates, which ultimately I want these guys to approve of what I'm doing," Huston said. "I keep making field goals and they will."

But it's going to come down to what the front office thinks of Huston. And he'd better beat out Tynes by a big margin because the team gave up a draft pick in a trade with Kansas City to acquire Tynes.

"I'm not out there searching for confidence; I'm out there to prove what I can do," Huston said. "I'm trying to give the coaches and the front office confidence, not necessarily me."

Said coach Tom Coughlin: "He definitely helped himself (on Sunday) and it was good to see."

And he'd better beat out Tynes by a big margin because the team gave up a draft pick in a trade with Kansas City to acquire Tynes.

Typical front-office logic: "Hey, it doesn't matter that Huston is better...we gave up a lot to get Tynes so we're keeping Tynes and letting the better kicker go. We need to get out money's worth out of this lesser kicker." :roll1:

Huston-Tynes in fight for Giants placekicking job
8/22/2007, 8:54 p.m. EDT
By TOM CANAVAN
The Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? One of the toughest decisions coach Tom Coughlin is going to have to make this year is choosing the New York Giants' placekicker.

Veteran Lawrence Tynes and free agent Josh Huston have competed in training camp at the University at Albany. Neither has gone out and won the job. Both have been inconsistent.

Huston, who has never played in the NFL, converted on attempts from 30 and 50 yards in Sunday's 13-12 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Tynes, a four-year veteran who was acquired in a trade from Kansas City for a conditional draft pick, has not attempted a field goal in the two preseason games.

While there have not been a lot of field goal attempts, Coughlin said he has watched their kickoffs and charted their practice kicks.

Huston seems to have kicked off better, but Tynes has been bothered by sore legs.

"Time is running thin and, as I said the other day, the thing that we need to do is create opportunity for Lawrence to kick field goal distance in the game," Coughlin said Wednesday.

Both kickers were 2-for-2 on field goal attempts in practice Wednesday night.

"You're always in a position where you're always looking for the best available player, but the way that they've competed and the way that Huston's kicked, that's pretty strong," Coughlin said. "So we'll see how this fares in the final two games."

Huston, who kicked at Ohio State, was confident about his chances.

"I have been right there the whole time," he said. "If you look at the statistics in camp, I am ahead. All you can do is worry about yourself, make all your kicks and make it hard for them to say no."

Tynes wasn't concerned about his lack of field goal attempts.

"They have seen me kick in games before," Tynes said. "When I kicked in Kansas City in the preseason, the kicks came in bunches and I made them."

Tynes & Huston don't get a leg up

BY RALPH VACCHIANO
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Lawrence Tynes and Josh Huston took turns kicking away the Giants' place-kicking job last night. Then again, maybe they never really had a chance.

With the Giants playing without injured long-snapper Ryan Kuehl and holder Jeff Feagles, Tynes aptly described the kicking team as "a mess." That's a big reason why he was just 1-of-3, missing from 40 and 43 yards, while Huston missed his only chance from 42 in the Giants' 20-12 loss to the Jets.

"I did what I could with every ball," Tynes said. "You guys watched the game. I hit every ball well. I did what I could with what was given to me. But you know what? That's an excuse. ... They're misses. The bottom line is it doesn't matter."

GIANTS LOOK FOR KICK START
By PAUL SCHWARTZ
August 27, 2007 -- Based on the performances of Lawrence Tynes and Josh Huston in Saturday night's 20-12 preseason loss to the Jets, it certainly is possible the Giants do not yet have their kicker for their final roster.

Tynes, with three years experience with the Chiefs, missed from 40 and 43 yards before making a 40-yard field goal. Huston, an NFL novice, opened eyes last week by nailing a 50-yarder in Baltimore, but caused grimaces when his lone attempt, a 42-yarder, sailed wide right.

Huston did manage to send a kickoff out of the end zone for a touchback.

Tom Coughlin said there are no definitive plans to try out any kickers outside the organization.

"I don't know that we'll try any," Coughlin said. "There's not going to be any panic. We certainly are not going to miss anything and evaluate those people throughout the league who are working or might come available. But we're going to continue to work with the kickers we have as well."

The three-man operation for field goals is supposed to consist of long-snapper Ryan Kuehl, holder Jeff Feagles and the kicker. Kuehl is likely through for the season with injuries to his calf and Achilles tendon and Feagles sat out Saturday's game because of back spasms. Rookie defensive tackle Jay Alford out of Penn State is handling the snapping and rookie punter Cory Ohnesorge was the emergency holder.

Tynes' second miss clearly was affected by a low Alford snap, resulting in a leaning hold by Ohnesorge.

"The laces were back and to the left and the ball tracked left, that's what happens," Tynes said. "Everyone else on this team is paid to do a job. I controlled what I could do and I didn't do a very good job of it."

Giants kicking job still wide open
Posted: Monday August 27, 2007 4:12PM; Updated: Monday August 27, 2007 4:12PM

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- With less than two weeks to go before the regular-season opener, the New York Giants are still looking for a kicker.

Neither veteran Lawrence Tynes nor free agent Josh Huston has won the job in training camp, and there is the possibility that Tom Coughlin may have to look at the waiver wire to find a kicker for the Sept. 9 game in Dallas.

The kickers are 3-for-6 on field goal attempts in preseason, and they haven't been much better in kicks during training camp.

Huston had a chance to take a big step toward winning the job on Saturday. The Ohio State product had converted from 30 and 50 yards the previous week against Baltimore, and when he went on the field late in the fourth quarter for a 42-yard attempt, all he needed was another between the uprights. The kick went wide right.

"Every kick is an opportunity and, if you look at it that way, I let an opportunity go that I would like to have back," Huston said.

Huston has kicked a little better than Tynes in training camp. His kickoffs are a little longer and he had made 14-of-15 field goal attempts in games and practices before missing one Saturday night.

"I am hitting the ball well," Huston said. "I am hitting the ball solid and feeling confident in what the operation is."

Huston also may have something working in his favor that has nothing to do with kicking.

The Giants acquired Tynes from Kansas City earlier this year for a conditional seventh-round draft pick. If Tynes does not make the team, the pick goes back to New York.

Earlier in his career with the Buckeyes, he split time with Jets kicker Mike Nugent.

It was a weird experience, Huston said, noting that coach Jim Tressel had both kickers warm up during games and then make a split-second decision on who would kick.

"This is nothing compared to that," Huston said of his current situation. "It helps I have had experience in this sort of thing. It's not known and it doesn't bother me. I can affect it by kicking well or kicking poorly. So I am going to kick as well as I can to make it easier for them to make a decision."

There goes that conspiracy theory. Looks like Josh just needs to earn it. This decision can't possibly be being made based on game performance. Josh has been killing kickoffs, and the one game where they had an intact crew for kicks, he was right down the middle on both of his FG attempts. I hope that he catches on in NY, because the Browns aren't smart enough to see that Phil Dawson is washed up, and Huston would be a great fit in Cleveland.

Looks like Lawrence Tynes didn't win the kicking job yet. According to someone who has spoken to K Dave Rayner recently, the former Packer will be visiting the Giants soon for a workout and physical. The person said Rayner could be here as soon as tonight and would presumably work out tomorrow. The Giants weren't willing to trade a draft pick for Rayner yesterday but would obviously like to take a look at him. Also, K Josh Huston is on his way to Kansas City for a workout with the Chiefs one day ater being cut by the Giants.
