K Josh Huston (official thread)

TRYOUTS: The Bengals are still looking at special teams and linebacker help and killed the proverbial two birds with one stone Tuesday when they worked out former first day draft pick Jordan Beck, according to a NFC source that also said veteran kickers Josh Huston and Nick Novak and tight end .Tim Massaquoi had tryouts.

Beck, the Falcons third-rounder out of Cal Poly in 2005, was cut on Monday by Atlanta. He finished second on the club with 13 special teams tackles last season.

Shayne Graham is believed to be ready to go for Monday night's opener, but the Bengals brought in Huston and Novak apparently in case his hip pointer flares up this week.

The players had Tuesday off and are back to work Wednesday.

Huston, a former Ohio State kicker, got cut by the Giants over the weekend despite two fourth-quarter field goals in a 13-12 win over the Ravens in a preseason game last month that included a 50-yarder. Novak, cut by the Bears Aug. 28, has kicked for Arizona and Washington during two years in the league and has made 13 of 20 field goals.

Josh might get a shot with the Bengals or Jags

Graham reaggravated his hip injury suffered Aug. 27 in Atlanta when he was involved in the coverage of Ed Reed's return on a line drive that was his missed 53-yard field goal.

Some decisions loom for next Sunday. Does Anderson make his 114th straight start, and do the Bengals sign one of the two kickers they worked out last week, Josh Huston or Nick Novak?

Giants to work out Ks Huston, Cundiff

Huston at training camp this summer.Tom Coughlin said there's reason to be concerned about the kicking game. Right now, there's reason for Lawrence Tynes, who missed a field goal and an extra point on Sunday, to be concerned about his job.

The Giants were scheduled to work out two free-agent kickers today: Josh Huston and Billy Cundiff, according to someone familiar with the team's plans. It's unclear if those workouts will take place this afternoon or if they already occurred this morning.

Huston was with the Giants in training camp and battled Tynes all the way to the final cuts, when the Giants decided to go with Tynes, whom they acquired in a trade with the Chiefs in May.

Huston made three of his four field-goal attempts in the preseason, including a 50-yarder against the Ravens. His miss was from 42 yards in the preseason meeting with the Jets. Tynes missed from 43 and 40 that night.

Coughlin said after final cuts were made the competition between Tynes and Huston was "very close."

Cundiff is the former Cowboys kicker, who was signed by the Saints last year as a kickoff specialist. Cundiff, who worked out for the Giants in the spring, lost out to Matt Prater in a competition for the Falcons' job in training camp. Prater was waived on Sept. 17 when Atlanta signed 47-year-old kicker Morten Andersen.

We'll see if the Giants sign either Huston or Cundiff later this afternoon.

GIANTS AUDITION PAIR OF KICKERS
By PAUL SCHWARTZ
October 3, 2007 -- Not pleased with the performance of kicker Lawrence Tynes - who last weekend against the Eagles missed a 34-yard field-goal try and an extra point - the Giants yesterday worked out but didn't sign two kickers, Josh Huston and Billy Cundiff.

Huston this past summer lost a training-camp battle with Tynes, although in many respects he was the more consistent of the two. Cundiff, 27, spent four years kicking for the Cowboys, and in the second half of last season was the kickoff specialist for the Saints. Cundiff worked out for the Giants last spring before they traded with the Chiefs to acquire Tynes.

This season, Tynes has connected on seven of nine field goals. Both his misses are from 34 yards.

KICKER: Also, the Bengals signed former Ohio State kicker Josh Huston to their practice squad. He has no NFL game experience in his second year. But he might get work with the Bengals as a kickoff specialist.

Huston said he has been told by coaches to concentrate on kickoffs and not worry about field goals.

"He has a very strong leg," Lewis said. "With the move we made with John (Busing) today in this particular one-week situation, it gave us a chance to work with him a little more - and we'll evaluate where we are at the end of the week and make a decision one way or the other."

Bengals sign ex-OSU kicker
Former Ohio State kicker Josh Huston was signed to the practice squad, and there's a chance he could handle kickoffs Sunday to take some of the load off Shayne Graham.

"I know Shayne's had issues with his hip," Huston said. "I'm not sure if they're protecting against that. They said all you're here to do is kick off."

Despite the hip bruise, Graham has made 7 of 8 field goal attempts, with the only miss a 53-yarder. But some of his kickoffs have been short.

Lewis said a decision about whether to promote Huston to the active roster will be made later this week.

Huston has not kicked in an NFL game. He was with Chicago and the New York Giants the past two preseasons. He was in New Orleans on Tuesday working out for the Saints when the Bengals called.

Huston has been living in Grove City.

"I've been working for a buddy -- mowing lawns and cleaning out foreclosed houses," he said. "I'm glad to be coming here instead of cutting lawns."

Former OSU kicker joins practice squad

CINCINNATI ? Cornerback Johnathan Joseph's one-game suspension for violating the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy triggered some changes to the Cincinnati Bengals' roster.

Rookie cornerback Leon Hall will start in Joseph's place at Kansas City, while second-year safety John Busing claimed Joseph's spot on the 53-man roster with a promotion from the practice squad.

To fill the void on the practice squad, the Bengals signed former Ohio State kicker Josh Huston.

Shayne Graham has struggled with kickoffs this season because of a right hip pointer.

"(The coaches) told me, 'All you're here to do is kickoff ? not field goals or anything,' " Huston said. "If you go back to my college career, that's what I did well."

Huston spent the preseason with the New York Giants. He had just finished a workout for the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday when his agent called, telling him to head to Cincinnati.

Hope for Huston?

Huston was 3-for-4 on field goals this preseason, including a 50-yarder, but the Giants released him Sept. 1.

"He has a very strong leg," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "With the move we made with (Busing) in this particular one-week situation, it gave us a chance to work with (Huston) a little more. We'll evaluate where we are at the end of the week and make a decision one way or the other."

The life of a practice-squad player is a curious one.

"It could be a week or two weeks, and then you're out," Huston said. "Or it could be a week, and you're on the active roster."

Notebook: Bolts consider adding kickoff specialist

By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer

SAN DIEGO -- The Chargers worked out four kickers Thursday and continue to ponder whether to add a kickoff specialist for Sunday's game at Oakland because of Nate Kaeding's injury to his plant leg.

Billy Cundiff, Josh Huston, Nick Novak and Dave Rayner were all brought in for workouts. General manager A.J. Smith said coach Norv Turner will likely make a decision today.

"We all looked at the workouts and Coach will make the decision one way or the other on whether he wants to do it or not do it," Smith said.

Cundiff, 27, was born in Valley Center, and spent four seasons with Dallas and one with New Orleans. Novak, 26, has two seasons of experience with Washington and Arizona. Rayner was released by Kansas City last month and also has been employed by Indianapolis (2005) and Green Bay (2006). Huston, a former Ohio State kicker, has never played in an NFL game.

Kaeding injured his left fibula during Monday's game with Denver. Turner is looking to add a kickoff specialist because he prefers that Mike Scifres focus solely on punting.

"I would expect Nate to be all right on the place-kicking and that's why we're being a little bit deliberate with this process," Turner said.

HUSTON RETURNS: Former Ohio State kicker Josh Huston was on the field at the Superdome last night, wearing his Buckeyes jersey and going head-to-head with LSU. Huston, who last played for Ohio State in the 2005 season, was part of a halftime contest that put him up against former LSU kicker David Browndyke.

Huston, a native of Findlay and a high school teammate of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, hit kicks from 43 and 45 yards in the competition to win $100,000 for the general scholarship fund at Ohio State. Huston, who shares the Ohio State record with five field goals in one game, has been with several NFL teams since he left Ohio State.

Kicker Josh Huston lost out to Lawrence Tynes in training camp last summer.

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Giants have signed K Josh Huston, who was with the team in camp last year, according to Huston's agent, Jeff Chilcoat. Huston worked out with Billy Cundiff today as well as another unidentified kicker.

Huston will handle kicking duties on Monday against the Browns in place of Lawrence Tynes, who hurt his leg earlier this week during practice. How long Huston remains on the roster after that will be determined by how quickly Tynes can recover.

The 26-year-old Huston, who attended Ohio State, made three of his four field-goal attempts last preseason, including a 50-yarder against the Ravens. He missed wide right from 42 against the Jets, though he did have a touchback in that game.

Tynes hurting, Giants sign Huston
By PAUL SCHWARTZ

ALBANY - Well, that was quick.

In what seems to be a recurring loop, the GiantsNew York Giants have signed Josh Huston to handle their place-kicking duties for Monday night's preseason game against the Browns at Giants Stadium. How long Huston stays around after that depends on how Lawrence TynesLawrence Tynes ' left leg heals.

Tynes has missed five consecutive days after he slipped on the wet grass and injured his plant leg. He said the team's medical personnel are optimistic about his recovery and that an MRI revealed nothing alarming. But he can't kick in a few days, and so the Giants quickly gathered three kickers for a tryout. Huston, who was with the team last year and in some ways out-kicked Tynes during training camp, was the selection. One of the other kickers at the tryout is believed to be Billy Cundiff, someone the Giants also worked out last year.

Huston, 26, performed well last summer, hitting three of his four field goal attempts in the preseason but the coaching staff opted to go with the more experienced Tynes and sent Huston packing. He briefly hooked on with the Bengals but did not last long.
