Cavs' offense struggles again in loss to Ironmen | chillicothegazette.com | Chillicothe Gazette

The Cavs came close to shaking off the dust with a tricky onside kick on the opening kickoff. But after recovering the opening kick and driving within striking distance, Chillicothe quarterback Shay Netter threw an interception, and the offense never got that close again.

The biggest play of the day was through the Cavs' usually reliable special teams. A blocked field goal in the first quarter set up Jackson with a short field, and eventually led to a one-yard touchdown run by Jackson quarterback Kruize Wandling.

Chillicothe's Basil, Skowronek lead All-Ohio

Chillicothe's Drew Basil and Tony Skowronek have played soccer together for as many years as they can remember, so it only seems appropriate the longtime teammates and friends ended their high school soccer careers on the same high note.

The two Cavaliers were named fiirst-team All-Ohio in Division II on Monday. Both players also picked up All-Ohio accolades in 2008 as juniors.

"I'd say this is the highlight of my two All-Ohios because I got to make first team with Tony this year, and making first team is really exciting," Basil said.

"It actually feels good (to be named to the first team) with Drew," Skowronek said. "It shows how much we've grown together, and all the experience we've had playing with each other."

Big day for area
Basil among those who cash in on scholarship offers to D-I schools

Amid the celebration and behind all the speeches and handshakes of Drew Basil's signing shindig Wednesday at Shawnee Lanes was one simple truth:

This was a big day.

Not just for Basil, who certainly had plenty to celebrate after having delivered a few hours earlier the paperwork to make the next stage of his football career official. As Basil, his teammates, coaches, family, friends and fans celebrated his going to at Ohio State, many others around the area had their own reasons to celebrate, too.

A four-year starter in football and soccer at Chillicothe, Basil was the local highlight of a day that proved the long-standing walls between athletes in this area and playing for high-profile college programs finally are being beaten down.

"Like I said during the program, you're seeing more and more of our kids going to big schools and getting their education paid for because of what they can do athletically and academically," said Bill Davidson, the head football coach at Chillicothe during all four years of Basil's career.

Basil scored 172 points for the Cavaliers, and holds the school record with a 50-yard field goal. But on top of the numbers were the other things he brought to the program.

"Drew didn't just show up to kick," Davidson said. "He came in and lifted weights with the rest of the team to get bigger and stronger. He proved that he wasn't just a kicker -- he was a football player who just happened to be a kicker."

The reality has been in place for a while for Basil. He verbally committed to Ohio State before the high school season started, so the celebration Wednesday or the actual signing of the letter of intent didn't really change things for him.

"For me, it's a big day, but it doesn't really change much," he said. "It's basically the same as it was when I committed, but now it's on paper. All I can do is just go there and do the best I can. No matter what, I've got to try my hardest."

The coaches never treat the kick scrimmage, scheduled Saturday, as a formality for the specialists involved. Freshman kicker Drew Basil served notice on the last play of today?s practice he might be ready to challenge Devin Barclay for the No.1 job, even if Basil has been on campus just two weeks. When the third-team offense bogged down after driving to the 35-yard line in the last scrimmage session of the day, Basil stepped in and nailed a 52-yard field goal.

The newest Ohio State player is thrilled to have been given a role to play right away.

Drew Basil, a kicker from Chillicothe, is one of just two members of the 2010 recruiting class to enroll early. His classmate, running back Carlos Hyde, has been on campus since January, but Basil arrived just a few weeks ago for spring quarter.

"It's been great," he said yesterday after the kick scrimmage in Ohio Stadium. "I've learned to get some self-motivation for classwork, just learning to live the right way and make the right decisions."

Basil appears to be the early front-runner to handle kickoffs in the fall. The other scholarship kickers have been focusing primarily on place kicking (Devin Barclay) and punting (Ben Buchanan).

That leaves a potential path to immediate playing time for Basil, who has been driving his kickoffs consistently deep in practice. He also made a 47-yard field goal in the scrimmage.

"I'm just going to do whatever the coaches ask me to," he said.

Just for a moment, though, he sounded like the youngster that he is. Talking about how he has assimilated to college life and bonded with teammates so far, he said, "It's just been really great to meet some of these big guys that you used to see on TV all the time."
