K Drew Basil (Cleveland Gladiators)

Former CHS kicker Drew Basil makes opening kickoff of OSU spring game
By TOM WILSON ? CentralOhio.com ? April 24, 2010

COLUMBUS ? Former standout Chillicothe kicker Drew Basil couldn?t have asked for a better way to start his college career.

Basil, who verbally committed to Ohio State last summer and finished high school early so he could participate in spring football practice, got his first taste of what Buckeye football is all about during Saturday?s spring game.

Basil had the honor of booting the opening kickoff in front of the 65,223 who were in attendance Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

He played a huge part in the Gray?s 17-14 victory against the Scarlet and by doing so put himself in the mix to be Buckeyes? starting placekicker.

Devin Barclay and Ben Buchanan also are in the thick of the placekicking battle, but Basil is right there after a strong spring. His performance Saturday might have lifted him even a little higher on the pecking order.

Going 11 of 12 on FGs in the kick scrimmage, with a 46-yarder to tie it at 40, and a 37 yarder for the final points, is an excellent start. His only miss hit the crossbar from 45 yards.

Kicker Drew Basil

The true freshman knew he wasn't getting the job done on kickoffs, his shorter kicks contributing to the Buckeyes' coverage woes. He got a major workout as the Buckeyes kicked off 12 times against Eastern Michigan. With a minor adjustment in his steps during the week, he did his job much better.

Basil said his goal is to at least kick the ball inside the 5. He did that eight of 12 times, including three touchbacks. The four kickoffs outside the 5 landed at the 6, 7, 9 and 13.

Best of all, the Buckeyes didn't allow a kickoff return TD.

"It's a great feeling. That's what I've been working most of my life for, to hit the ball well," Basil said. "I just listened to the coaches and they said we needed to get better at this as a team and I felt like we did a lot better today. ... I think we've got it sorted out."

Nothing to quantify this at all but I think a part of the issue of our Kick Return issues have been with the kick. The ball sometimes is getting down to the 5ish but the hang time is not there.

It was great to see some balls go deep in the end zone yesterday. Think we are going to be very solid at kick offs and FG's with this young man.

Glad to see that Basil definitely has the leg to get it to the endzone on KOs. Now he just needs to work on some consistency.

I watched him run down the field and make a pretty decent tackle on one KO. Then on another, some guy pushed him after the play and he shoved him right back. I loved seeing some aggresiveness out of him...he might be the future after all. :)

OSU football: Freshman Basil's kickoffs better now that he's started to relax

Drew Basil enrolled in school early to get a leg up on kicking for the Buckeyes.

Drew Basil knows that what he does for Ohio State is considered one of the simpler jobs in sports.

The ball is sitting on a tee. No one is rushing at him as he swings into it. All he has to do is make solid contact, and, boom, that kickoff is gone to the horizon. You know, like a tee shot in golf. How much simpler can it get?

"Fore!" There were a few times in the first three games this season when Basil, a freshman from Chillicothe, probably wanted to scream that, or "Chili dip!" The inconsistency helped explain why the much-sought symbiosis between kickoff and kickoff coverage wasn't working that well for the Buckeyes, who gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown in the win over Miami.

But those who watched Basil in high school, or in OSU spring drills when he showed up early this year to get a head start on college, knew there was more potential bang for the Buckeyes.

"When he's got a nice arc on his swing and he kicks it through, he's got more power than he can stand," coach Jim Tressel said.

COLUMBUS -- Drew Basil certainly solidified his role as Ohio State's starting place-kicker on Saturday in Ohio Stadium.

While he didn't get a chance to show off his long-range leg, he booted a pair of field goals and three extra points for the offense in a 59-27 win against the defense in the annual spring game.

The sophomore from Chillicothe, who is replacing the graduated Devin Barclay, was the first kicker on the field. He made both his field goal tries of 22 and 27 yards, then kicked three straight PATs.

Because it was a controlled scrimmage, there were no kickoffs or punts.

Basil is taking his new role in stride after handling primarily just kickoffs last year as a freshman.

"It wasn't too bad," he said. "It was nice to wrap up the spring with a good practice. I've just been going with the flow, doing what I need to do."

Ohio State kicker has youth, and leg, on his side
Aug 23, 2011

COLUMBUS -- With his boyish good looks, Ohio State placekicker Drew Basil could pass for a high school sophomore instead of a college sophomore.

That's a striking departure for the Buckeyes, who had grown accustomed in recent years to having kickers who lugged around Golden Buckeye cards.

Basil is replacing Devin Barclay, a former professional soccer player who finished his OSU career almost as old (27) as some of the coaches on the staff. A couple of years before Barclay, there was Ryan Pretorius, the ex-pro rugby player from South Africa. He was 29 when he kicked his final field goal through the uprights.

Basil is a relative kid by comparison.

"I feel comfortable," the former All-Ohioan from Chillicothe said. "Everybody else is about my age."
