Still on the money
Drew Basil kicked field goals of 36 and 45 yards to extend his streak of made kicks to 12. His rebound has come after missing his first two of this season and his only two attempts last year.
Basil credited snapper George Makridis, holder Derek Erwin and his blockers. ?I really feel like everybody?s given me the chance to go out and do my thing,? Basil said.
The only adjustment he has made after the slow start was a minor one.
?Honestly, what I do now is go back there and take a deep breath,? Basil said. ?Just that deep breath, it?s unbelievable what it can do.?
Basil?s streak is the third-longest streak in Ohio State history behind Mike Nugent?s 24 in 2001-02 and Vlade Janakievski?s 15 in 1979-80. ?I know both of them and they?re great guys,? Basil said.
Basil?s day wasn?t flawless. He booted the opening kickoff out of bounds, just as he did on his final kickoff last week against Wisconsin.
?Just a bad kick,? Basil said. ?I jammed my ankle on the plant, and it caused of lot of smaller things to happen.?
Basil has quietly connected on 12 straight field goals and converted all of his extra point attempts. To start the year, Basil missed his first two attempts, but since then, has not missed.
Basil said there is a process he now goes through that helps him battle pre-kick nerves.
"Honestly, what I do now is I just go back there and I take a deep breath before I start going," Basil said. "Just that deep breath ? it's unbelievable what it can do. I pray to God before, during and after every game."
Basil said during the first two games he was nervous. Now, he says those nerves are gone.
Basil, from Chillicothe, Ohio, said a lot of the credit for the kicking success goes to his snapper, sophomore George Makridis, holder Derek Erwin and the offensive line.
"They are definitely doing a great job with holding everybody up, getting the snap and hold down every time," Basil said.
Basil said it feels good to be the number one kicker, adding that he is getting competition every week from freshman kicker Russell Doup.
"It's nice to have a challenge."
Basil was incredible. He should be first-team all-B1G.crazybuckeye;2049742; said:Drew somewhat quietly, because the team had such a disappointing season, had what I consider to be an all- conference season. Just wanted to say thanks for the effort and I hope he gets the recognition he deserves.
Awards watch: Basil is a Groza candidate

The season is finally getting closer. The release of preseason watch lists for the major college football awards confirms it, and starting with the first two that were released on Monday and including all of them that follow, BuckeyeNation will break them down to see which Ohio State representatives have a shot at bringing home some hardware.
Lou Groza Award
What: The nation's top kicker
On the list: Buckeyes junior Drew Basil
Credentials: Led the Big Ten in field goal percentage as a sophomore by connecting on 16 of his 19 attempts, which included a run of 12 in a row at one point. All three of the misses last season came on attempts of longer than 40 yards.
Head to head: Showcase opportunities against other kickers up for consideration -- Dan Conroy (Michigan State), Mitch Ewald (Indiana), Anthony Fera (Penn State), Brendan Gibbons (Michigan), Ty Long (UAB) and Brett Maher (Nebraska).
Odds: With the number of opportunities overall or in clutch situations difficult to project, pegging this award in the preseason can be tough. But another similar campaign from Basil could put him in the mix for a spot on the list of semifinalists, particularly if he can add a conversion or two from more than 50 yards.

OSU kicker Drew Basil is attempting fewer field goals in coach Urban Meyer's offense.
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Drew Basil was stunned when he opened last week's game against California with a missed extra point.
"It's like when you're teeing off [in golf] and you go up there and feel good after your practice swing and you drive and start it right down the middle of the fairway and out of nowhere it takes off and you almost hit a house on the right side of the rough," Basil said.
He didn't have much of a chance to make up for it.
Basil is tied for 85th in the country in field goals. A year ago, he was the Big Ten's most accurate kicker and now he may not even qualify to make the list.
It's not his fault.
