Just say "NO!" to ESPN

Good stuff, Steve19.

My bet would be that we'll start to hear reference to "issues in the Geiger era" (or not hear, given that we aren't listening ). By temporarily spinning the whole bashfest as an issue with Geiger rather than the program at large, they could try to "make nice" sufficiently for the Gameday invite. If ESPN sent on its merry way, they can then complain about how tOSU holds a grudge.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems a pretty obvious move to me, so I'm getting annoyed in advance.

:grr:

Thanks. One thing I'm sure we can count on, they will wait until Gene Smith arrives and then start trashing him while trying to cast aspersions on OSU.

...There is certainly no love lost between T and Herbstreit. I have always contended that Kirk is trying so hard to appear "neutral" as an OSU grad that he has instead leaned too far the other way--attacking the Buckeyes and the program...

Uh, when did Herbstreit ever "attack" the program?

So, will Kirk be welcome on the sidelines on Saturday? I will keep my eye out!
By idiots like you? Probably not. By intelligent people that understand the position that Kirk's in. Yes, he will be. But, since he didn't come out swinging against his employer, he's definitely a traitor, that shouldn't be allowed to step on campus ever again.:roll1:

Well, the Game Day boys seemed to have their claws out on more than one occasion. They weren't as vindictive as some of the other ESPN commentators, but Herbstreit's negative comments got a LOT of play in the Columbus area.

"But I am getting angry listening to everyone on ESPN (quick note: I’m not going to go as far as Andy Geiger, OSU’s athletic director, by implying that the network has an agenda against OSU, but since that’s where I get all my sports news, that’s the place I’ve been hearing it, from Tirico/Herbstreit/Corso to Windbag Trev and Mark May to a couple of different ESPN Radio shows earlier today.) railing on the Buckeye football program for the recent transgression involving quarterback Troy Smith receiving a payment from a booster. As best I can tell, the athletic department learned of the mistake and immediately levied a fair punishment. They didn’t, as some schools may have, look the other way." (See http://chisport.com/blog/index.php?cat=19)

Channel 5 News reported it this way: http://www.newsnet5.com/sports/3926309/detail.html

Regarding Kirk's role in Columbus area radio programming:
"Now, Kirk Herbstreit. I once heard someone refer to Herbstreit by saying, "Herbie wears his Ohio State diploma like an albatross around his neck." Interesting analogy. I think Herbstreit sometimes is embarrassed being associated with Ohio State. He has listened to a million ignorant fans call in with ridiculous opinions over the years. The problem is, Herbstreit often lets 1% of the Ohio State fan base taint his entire opinion of Ohio State fans. He has used this analogy himself that a small percentage of fans are vocal and the entire fan base is stereotyped, but he still lets himself fall into this trap. I really feel that Herbstreit gets so sick of listening to the Buckeye homers that call in, that he loves to bring up the SEC, their fans, and Florida and Tennessee especially. Basically, Herbstreit finds some gratification in saying, "Hey guys, there's better fans than Ohio State fans and there's better football than Ohio State football. Open your eyes." (http://www.buckeyefootball.homestead.com/1460.html)

Personally, I have a great deal of respect for Kirk Herbstreit. I am just saying that in his attempt to be objective, he has alienated a number of Buckeye fans and coaches/administrators. I suppose in a sense he is being held to a higher level of expectations because he is a former Buckeye in a very prominent position at ESPN. While Kirk was not nearly as vocal as some of the other folks at the network and magazine, many fans were hoping that he would focus more on the positive ways that the administration tried to deal with Clarrett and his whining posse. When he, too, questioned the ethics of tOSU athletic department, it was a painful accusation for fans.

Oh my! Gee, I always look forward to seeing Kirk on the sidelines. I think it's pretty cool that he has maintained such a devotion to the team after so many years.

My comment was meant to SUPPORT Kirk, not denigrate him. With so much negativity focused towards Kirk in the Columbus area for awhile, my fear was that he would not be welcomed by the team/staff.

Sorry my writing is so poor and that I was unable to articulate my position. My apologies . . . .

Well, now I'm embarrassed. We've seen a lot of Kirk bashing posts, and it looked like that's where you were going with yours. Try some of these, they help idiots like me read into the meaning of your posts better. :):(:!:wink2::tongue2::roll2::cool:

Thanks, IBI. I don't know how to use those emoticons because I am new here!

In any event, Kirk was in a difficult spot and I respect the fact that--as he said in his response to Geiger--he was just trying to be an unbiased journalist. I have always enjoyed watching Kirk playing with his two little boys on the sidelines during the Scarlet and Gray game! I hope that he continues to be a part of that spring tradition.

I just feel bad that I had potentially offended people, so I just went ahead and deleted the post.
