John Groce (HC Akron Zips)

I haven't seen it brought up anywhere, but just a thought:

If we were to win the national title this year, is there any chance that Matta retires and we bring back Groce? I don't think anyone is expecting Matta to coach a whole lot longer with his health issues, and going out after the national title seems fitting.

No idea if this is a realistic possibility, its just what I keep thinking when I hear Groce's name bandied about.

I wonder about that as well but just normal day to day stuff causes Matta a tremendous amount of pain. It seems to me that his mindset is that if he's going to be in pain anyway he might as well be in pain doing something he loves to do. At least for now.

Tribune said that Illinois was prepared to make Shaka Khan the second highest paid Big Ten coach after Izzo. I gotta believe that Groce is gone.

Basically Groce was offered last night. He is sleeping on it and the decision will be today.

So, you guys got Boals ready for us, right?

Brad Stevens also turned them down

Shaka Smart turned down Illinois to stay at Virginia Commonwealth. Brad Stevens turned down Illinois down to stay at Butler. Smart and Stevens are bright, young stars, and the last time anyone checked, VCU and Butler are not exactly North Carolina and Kansas.

Smart and Stevens wanted no part of the Illini, probably because they are happy where they are ? and because the Illinois job has a trace of poison to it. Champaign has developed into a difficult place to win, and athletic director Mike Thomas, who in a span of four months has fired his football and basketball coaches, seems to have an itchy trigger finger. Why move into that culture when your own fiefdom thrives?

There are millions of reasons.

Reportedly, Smart and Stevens were offered eight-year deals that approached $20 million in total compensation. Smart and Stevens could afford to turn down such offers. They are entrenched in programs in which they know they can win, and their contracts afford them enough luxury to sit tight until a more optimal situation presents itself.

Illinois fans are delusional if they don't want Groce. From Bob Baptist twitter account

Mark Znidar@MarkZnidar Lots of Illinois fans freaking out about #JohnGroce being the possible next basketball coach. They want a big name and not a mid-major guy.

I don't know about itchy "trigger finger". More like "marginally competent". The basketball program has been sliding ever since they lost to UNC in the finals, and Zook should have never been hired, let alone lasted as long as he did.

Boals going home? Wash, rinse, repeat. Used to see him around campus a lot when I was teaching there. Easy target LOL.

So, is the news about Groce's offer confirmed or just word on the street?

Why is that? Let's not forget what program we are talking about here. Who really wants to coach there?

Zook had a better winning percentage than the Illini average historically.
