John Calipari (official thread of impending probation)

This is not specific to Davis, but I am a firm believer in the World Wide Wes & Slickster Calipari angle. You guys don't think it was coincidence that Wall and others had seats right behind LeBron last year, do you? It is also well known that WWW tried to dangle Calipari as the Bulls next head coach - this would have required at least a verbal authorization by Calipari. People are kidding themselves if they don't want to see the WWW fingerprints all over Kentucky's recruiting.

I don't even understand why Cal didn't go to the NBA. Whats the point of coaching college when none of your players graduate and they all leave you after one year. Most coaches say the greatest joy in coaching is seeing the kids grow up on and off the court. Anyway I can't see how Cal can win a title with a new group of freshmen every year.

How much longer is Calipari going to last at UK? He probably will want to get out of dodge ASAP like he did at UMass and Memphis. Way too many reports circulating about too many negative things (i.e., Eric Bledsoe's academic eligibility, multiple freshmen from last year not being academically eligible at the end of the year, Enes Kanter playing for pay in Europe (which is still being investigated by the NCAA - they have not cleared him to play so far), paying A. Davis Sr. to get a commitment), plus his checkered past. The UK administration is spineless for both hiring him and letting all these things go on as the reputation of their "student-athletes" deteriorates.

Oh, I didn't know this one - this is from a long time ago - you can add hostile relations with reporters to his baggage:

Calipari Apologizes Publicly for His Slur
By SELENA ROBERTS
Published: March 25, 1997
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., March 24— Nets Coach John Calipari read a statement tonight apologizing to Dan Garcia, a reporter for The Star-Ledger of Newark, for profanely yelling at Garcia last week and calling him a ''Mexican idiot.''

''I would like to apologize to Dan Garcia for my ill-advised attempt at humor and insensitivity for the remark,'' Calipari said before the Nets lost to the Lakers, 109-84, tonight at the Meadowlands. ''In retrospect, I can understand how the remark could have been misinterpreted. I have apologized to him personally and in writing. In no way was my intent to be derogatory in a racial context, and I am sorry for any pain my remarks have caused.''

Garcia, who has covered the Nets for about a decade, said he has not spoken with Calipari since the incident occurred Thursday afternoon in the Ramapo College parking lot in Mahwah, N.J., after a Nets practice. He got a letter of apology tonight, and although it was not handed to him by Calipari, Garcia said he would accept it.

The public apology came after a day of meetings by the Nets to address the situation. The National Basketball Association was also in contact with the Nets. Part of what came out of those meetings was an agreement by Calipari to issue the apology.

''I think with the fact that Dan accepted the apology, then that's what we had in mind,'' said Terry Lyons, a league spokesman. ''We're glad Calipari apologized.''

No details were announced about the meeting between the team management and Calipari.

However, someone close to the situation said that Calipari had not been fined but that there was a reprimand of sorts and a warning that any similar conduct would not be tolerated. Nets President Michael Rowe would not comment on whether Calipari's contract contained a conduct code.

The Nets signed Calipari, 38, former coach at the University of Massachusetts, to a five-year, $15 million contract last summer as vice president of basketball operations and head coach. He has the final say on all basketball-related decisions.

Nets officials, who issued a public team apology on Sunday, have been clear that Calipari's remarks toward Garcia were viewed as harmful to the image the Nets want to build.

''It's disturbing because it's out of character for both John Calipari and unprecedented for the Nets,'' Rowe said today. ''We've not had a history of this, nor has he. It distracts from the work we're trying to do with this franchise. We're trying to be a community-based, inclusive organization, and remarks like this, while they were given spontaneously and probably in anger, make people think we are not that type of organization.''

Garcia has not commented on the encounter specifically, but he has not denied eyewitness accounts of the incident as follows:

Calipari was having a heated conversation with a New York Post reporter, Fred Kerber, about news media coverage of the Nets. Calipari saw Garcia across the parking lot and yelled in his direction, profanely calling him a ''Mexican idiot.''

Kerber tried to calm Calipari, who yelled, ''He gave me a D,'' referring to a midseason report card Garcia had written about the team. Garcia walked over to Calipari and asked him whether he had a problem with him. The two exchanged words. At one point, Garcia told Calipari he thought he was acting like a ''5-year old.'' Calipari replied, ''If you ever say that again, I will punch you in the face.''

Toward the end of the confrontation, Calipari apologized to Garcia if the ethnic remark had offended him. But Calipari added that if Garcia could not take a joke, he would not talk to him anymore.

Calipari had not commented on the incident publicly until tonight.

''I consider this matter closed,'' he said in ending his statement. ''I will have no further comment.''

seriously? a 13 year old incident? really?

anyway, my thoughts on Cal are this. Every frigging week there is a new report cropping up about what he did to get this guy and what he didn't do to help this guy, Cal is under the hugest microscope right now with so many people in the media just seemingly wanting to be the one to finally bust HIM on an infraction in which HE can be held accountable, I just find it hard to believe that he's out there offering recruits 200K or paying rent, or fudging test scores to keep players eligible.

Just my opinion though.

Kentucky denies payment for recruit

ESPN.com news services

The University of Kentucky issued a statement on Friday threatening legal action over a Chicago Sun-Times story claiming that recruit Anthony Davis negotiated a deal to receive $200,000 from someone who wanted him to commit to the school.

The intial Sun-Times story on Wednesday cited unidentified sources and stated:
"The rumors/sources that have Davis choosing Kentucky are also alleging that the commitment cost $200,000. [Anthony] Davis Sr. has flat out denied everything."

Kentucky responded in a statement.

"The University of Kentucky is dismayed by the continued lack of professionalism and responsible journalism exhibited by Michael O'Brien and the Chicago Sun-Times in running yet another false and defamatory story on August 6, 2010, regarding the University's recruitment of a high school student-athlete," the statement read. "Both the father of this student-athlete and the University have repeatedly told Mr. O'Brien that these unsubstantiated 'rumors' are untrue. Neither the University of Kentucky nor any member of its Athletic Department has offered or paid any money or other illegal benefits to the student-athlete or his family."

The school's statement goes on to say that Davis and/or the university may initiate legal proceedings.

"The University of Kentucky has put Mr. O'Brien and the Chicago Sun-Times on notice that these published statements are false and defamatory," the statement reads. "The University fully supports any action the student-athlete and his family may take against Mr. O'Brien and the Chicago Sun-Times. The University is also evaluating all available rights and remedies it may have against Mr. O'Brien and the Chicago Sun-Times in responding to these false and defamatory statements."

The father of the 6-foot-10 Davis told multiple media outlets that his son, who is in the Class of 2011, had decided which school he wanted to attend, but he did not reveal his decision. He had flown under the radar at Perspectives, a Chicago public charter school, and then burst onto the national scene due to his AAU performances.

The initial Sun-Times story also cited unidentified sources in saying that the NCAA was "checking" into the recruitment of Davis. Kentucky said this was a mischaracterization of the situation.

"The University of Kentucky spoke with David Price, NCAA Vice President of Enforcement, who advised that the NCAA contacted Mr. O'Brien simply to inquire as to the alleged sources for his article and that 'this in no way confirms an NCAA investigation of the University' or an examination of the recruitment of the named student-athlete. It is the University's understanding that such an inquiry represents the NCAA's normal procedure any time allegations of misconduct are made, no matter how outrageous or unsubstantiated they may be."

Despite Kentucky's statement, the Sun-Times stood by its story on Friday, and even elaborated:
"Sources from three separate universities told the Sun-Times that Davis Sr. asked for money in return for his son's commitment, with the amounts ranging from $125,000 to $150,000."

The newspaper reached out to an attorney for the family.
''Mr. Davis has not asked any university or college for any commitment fee for his son, nor has anything been offered to him or Mrs. Davis,'' Georgette L. Greenlee wrote Thursday, according to the Sun-Times.

Posts like the previous one need a link.

How to Link

First copy the URL into your clipboard with Cntl-C. Then type 'link' or 'ESPN' or 'whatever' inside your post, then highlight it with your mouse click, then click on the blue globe icon with the chain-link under it, then paste (Cntl-V) the URL into the window that pops up and the hit the OK button.

It's also preferable to have any text that's brought across from the link copied inside a quote box, so it's obvious what somebody's typing and what they've copied in from the link.
