I agree that Hoke's not much on the "nurture" side of the equation, but any kid who buys into the Michigan Man mentality has a "nature" problem as well.I personally know Joe and his family. I know it's ok to bash scUM players and he has taken a lot of heat for his actions and deservedly so. But let's not forget that it's the leadership at that [Mark May] hole that inspires and grows this behavior. Joe really is a good kid and I felt compelled to stand up for him a little because I think we sometimes lose sight of the kid who should be molded by adults and leaders and Hoke and his band of idiots are failing those kids.
Don't get me wrong. I hate scUM. It's just the perspective I have knowing this kid since 8th grade. And he never once said anything negative about OSU in all that time until Hoke started directing him.
It has to be seductive, though, to join a team where it's OK to display swagger whether or not you actually accomplish anything.I agree that Hoke's not much on the "nurture" side of the equation, but any kid who buys into the Michigan Man mentality has a "nature" problem as well.
The behavior was immature, but geez, it pales in comparison to the crap I did in college. Somebody earlier posted the image of the Bucks tearing down the M Club banner. I don't necessarily see those guys as having fundamental character issues.It has to be seductive, though, to join a team where it's OK to display swagger whether or not you actually accomplish anything.
I can't accept that the ridiculous posing on the Spartans' home field does not reflect fundamental character issues. I hope for the young man's sake that someone can find a way to address those issues and get him to behave more appropriately.
So you are not a douche if you win? I don't buy that logic even a little bit.To me there is a fundamental difference between doing edgy [Mark May] that you can back up and doing douchey [Mark May] that is just forced, hollow and lame. To use some non OSU examples;
FSU players going over and stealing the Gator head from the UF sideline is edgy but they backed it up. Not gay.
UGA guys getting the intentional unsportsmanlike for celebrating a TD followed by an epic ass kicking was fucking gay.
A team that is 2-6 against Michigan State and on the trajectory that Michigan has been on doesn't get away with such a super douche move unless they win after the fact. If they were equal or near equal, if a rail road spike had anything to do with Michigan's history, or if it wasn't so obviously phoney....winning wouldn't matter. What Michigan did equates to Illinois coming into the Shoe Saturday night with an OSU flag and ripping it to shreds at mid field while all the other players act like they're extras on the set of Braveheart. Sure they might win, but it's highly unlikely, and you're just making yourselves look like idiots before getting your asses beat.So you are not a douche if you win? I don't buy that logic even a little bit.
