Jimmy Clausen (Baltimore Ravens)

Technically, a school can offer if an underclassmen makes the contact first.

I assume this was the case with JamO since he verballed during hi sophomore year?

We also have BB verbal from a player who is now a sophomore who verballed as a freshman?

Also found it interesting that Petey told Jimmy Clausen that they have never offered a player as a Junior before. That has gotta be bullshit.... Petey's #1 guy.....

Fella,
I watch most of that last night...way passed midnight. Based on what I have seen, I do not believe it was Tom Friend that went "hunting" for recruiting violation in this one. He was doing this piece because of all the attention paid to Clausen. In fact, Clausen and his dad were the ones showing off his letters and offers to ESPN, which took full advantage of the violation. In one part, the lr. Clausen said that PC told him that he is the first junior that PC has ever offered; I doubt that it is true coming from Petey, but I have no hard facts to disapproved that. The letter was sent to Clausen in July of 2005 according to the show. My question is, what did we do differently for Super Mario when he commited to us while he was a sophomore? I did remember one part of the show when one of the experts said that it would have been okay if it was Clausen that have sought out the school first. That is kind of ironic because that was the phrase that Clausen's father used refering to South Carolina. I wonder if those words were encouraged by Steve Spurrier himself so that SC will not appeared to have violated any rules. I did miss a little bit of the beginning, which might change my opinion stated above.

Clausen

There is nothing that happens regarding Jr. is not carefully planned and orchestrated by Sr. He knows exactly what he's doing. If there was/is a "leak", it was a puposeful one. Sr. is well versed in the rules. Over the next 2 years, you'll see. Jr. will be the most hyped player ever. Aside from Lebron. And that's only becuase football players are amatuers. If endorsements were possible Sr. would make it happen. the guy is a "peice of work" to say the least! Trust me.

Great point. It took me about a nanosecond to figure out that was more Petey BS. Of course, Jimmy C seemed to eat it up just like Petey's 10 #1 guys each recruiting year. At some point Petey is really going to get a rep for spewing constant crap like that.

Here's hoping OSU wants nothing to do with this circus, no matter how good he is, and no matter what their chances at him may or may not be.

Sounds like this kid's gonna get pimped out to some SEC school.

Clausen & Friends Eye Gamecocks

By Phil Kornblut
Highly prized junior QB Jimmy Clausen (6-3 190) of Westlake Village, CA has narrowed his list to a handful of schools from more than fifty offers according to his father, and USC sits in a very strong position. "We're down to three to five schools with South Carolina being right there," Jim Clausen said Wednesday afternoon. "He's excited. He's got all the offers he needs now. It's all the right schools. What we want to do is spend time at those three to five schools and get him really comfortable." Jim Clausen said Notre Dame, Southern Cal and Michigan are the other schools in a strong position with his son. He also mentioned Michigan State, LSU (where they will visit unofficially this weekend), Alabama and Oklahoma as others still in the mix. Jim Clausen said a key factor in the decision will be the blessing of his other sons, Casey and Rick, on the final selection. "If you get Jimmy, you get all of us," he said. "The boys will have more influence and input than Cathy and I. We're just looking for a fit. Jimmy is waiting on his two older brothers to give him the nod and say that's the place." As for the Gamecocks, Jim Clausen said he and his son have been following closely. "We've watched every down of every South Carolina game," he said. "We know what's going on. Jimmy really likes coach Spurrier. It's unique and as a Dad I can see this thing. We've really got to get Casey in front of him (Spurrier). That's really critical. Jimmy fits what coach Spurrier wants him to do. Everything coach Spurrier is asking quarterbacks to do is something Jimmy is doing. There's a tremendous comfort level. Jimmy and coach have really hit it off. I know that there's chemistry there. It's a great opportunity and I know Jimmy is honored by someone like coach Spurrier showing interest in him. South Carolina is going to be right there." And Jim Clausen said if the Gamecocks were to land his son, they would stand a good chance of getting a few of his junior teammates. "Running back Mark Tyler is interested in going to school with Jimmy and he's going to go to South Carolina when we go there," he said. "He's the son of (former NFL running back) Wendell Tyler and he's a stud. He scores everytime he touches the ball. Casey Matthews (son of former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews) is a linebacker and he wants to go to school with Jimmy, too, and is intersted in South Carolina. When we come, we're bringing about five juniors. Jimmy is going to bring the troops. He's going to bring people from the West Coast." Jim Clausen said he's not sure when they will make the trip to Columbia but he hopes to do so within a month. USC and a few other programs recently reported a secondary violation for having written contact with Jimmy Clausen before the NCAA rules allow. This was first reported during an ESPN story on recruiting which included Clausen. "We were dissapointed in the ESPN piece," Jim Clausen said. "They originally wanted to talk about the three brothers. Somebody caught wind of the letters. All the mail has been going to the high school. Some of the mail has been addressed to Jimmy and not the head coach. That was a postcard sent out by Steve Spurrier Jr. as a follow up to one of our visits. The people wanted to sensationalize the piece. I don't know Pete Carroll. I know John L. Smith. I know a little of coach Spurrier. I didn't want that crap going out. If I had known they were doing that, I would have said I'm not comfortable with that. We called the people at South Carolina and apologized and made them aware after the fact. ESPN took it upon themselves to call the NCAA unbeknownst to us." Jim Clausen said his son his have a very good season thus far though his playing time is limited because of the one sided nature of the games. He said his son continues to work hard on his academics so that he can graduate in December 2006 and enroll in college the next January.

Its earlier than early, but you would have to think that SC is going to land this guy, with Steve Spurrier being Steve Spurrier, and the fact that half of the article was about SC, I would be surprised to see him play ball anywhere else.

Westlake Village?

Umm... I think he might be dating my friend...

EDIT: Nevermind, I thought he was going to Westlake Highschool.

But Oaks Christian? That's right down the way. I have a couple friends still over there. Might check out a game.

According to Rivals Radio, Clausen's final four are Notre Dame, South Carolina, USC, and Cal. Kind of surprised not to see Tennessee on there. Speculation seems to be that ND is his leader right now. I say don't rule out South Carolina and Spurrier though. They need a QB BADLY and can offer the starting job from day 1. The family has also built up a very strong relationship with "the old ball coach".
