What makes a letter illegal?

I'm not exactly sure of the rules completely, but I'm pretty sure you can't give written letters to underclassmen before a certain date.

That brings me to another point. I believe that date is Sept. 1 if I'm not mistaken. Today is Sept. 1, so maybe those letters came in today, or was this thing done before today?

They're not allowed to offer a written scholly till after Sept 1 of a student's junior year. Clausen has letters that say "we are offering you schollies" and it's just now the starting date. Tom Friend does nothing but dig up dirt, so here we have the story...

No link... yet. It was on Sportscenter, but I'd assume it will be front page soon...

PETE CARROL ILLEGALLY RECRUITING CHILDREN

edit: and if they ran the story today, I'd assume it was shot beforehand.

according to dumbasses- i mean espn, a printed letter is illegal, then they later noted something about a handwritten letter from south carolina, they did a shitty job clarifying that.

the bottom line is that alot of colleges has broken rules to contact/offer this kid.

Neither. It was Tom Lunginbill (sp?) the new head recruiting guy for ESPN
Hilarious! They've had three Tom's in the last year with frontpage articles doing nothing but spewing out venom... that's priceless. I'm assuming we're talking about the same negative writeup about recruiting and rolle.

USC In Great Shape With Clausen

By Phil Kornblut
Highly rated junior QB Jimmy Clausen (6-3 190) of Westlake Village, CA is putting his recruiting on hold right now as he prepares for the upcoming season. But after making several unofficial visits last week, including one to USC, it is clear the Gamecocks are weighing heavy on his mind. "We're very interested in South Carolina," said Clausen's father Jim. "Obviously, Jimmy and coach Spurrier are developing a chemistry and are getting more and more comfortable. We kind of sought him out. We felt this might be a place that would be a good fit for Jimmy and it might be turning out that way. It's early in the process. Jimmy said to me the other day, 'I need to go to work. I want to be the best quarterback in the nation. It's nice and I'm honored (by the all attention) but I need to get with my team.' That's where we're at right now. We'll try to get it down to four or five schools and thank everybody else for their time. As this thing goes down, I would be very surprised if South Carolina is not one of the schools we're talking about. He's very comfortable with what coach Spurrier asks his quarterbacks to do. I think coach Spurrier sees in Jimmy a man who has a lot of upside if he works hard and if all this nonsense doesn't go to his head. From this point on, he wants to be the best high school quarterback in the country. He needs to refocus and really go to work. Jimmy wants to go somewhere and build something special. That's where he and coach Spurrier are on the same page. They see something special at South Carolina. It's a great place, it's a great opportunity. But it's early in the process." Mr. Clausen said there's no leader for his son right now. Clausen also made unofficial visits last week to Tennessee, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame. He plans to take in games at several schools this season, including USC, but has not scheduled those dates.

This brings to mind several questions: Will ESPN start hunting out players who for one reason or another left the USC program and have an axe to grind? Will questions arise if the great players of USC's last two recruiting classes were involled in similar recruiting violations? Is this just the tip of the iceberg? Considering how smug the We Are SC posters were about the Clarrett BS, this couldn't have happened to a nicer group.

USC REPORT
Rule May Have Been Violated

By Gary Klein and Eric Sondheimer, Times Staff Writers

USC is among dozens of schools that may have violated NCAA rules recruiting Jimmy Clausen, a highly regarded quarterback from Westlake Village Oaks Christian High.

Clausen is a junior, and NCAA contact rules prohibit colleges from sending recruits written material other than a standard questionnaire until Sept. 1 of their junior year. USC is among the schools that jumped the gun with Clausen.
USC is expected to self-report a secondary infraction of the NCAA contact rule.

"We're aware of it and handling it internally," USC spokesman Tim Tessalone said Tuesday.

In most cases, a secondary infraction does not prevent a school from recruiting a particular athlete.

Clausen has been considered a top national recruit since he entered high school in 2003. He passed for 58 touchdowns and led Oaks Christian to a 14-0 record last season.
So clearly this all transpired before September 1, most likely sometime either in or prior to August.

If USC self reports a 2ndary violation does that mean their pursuit of Clausen is now officially over? EDIT - oops guess not ...

actually the guy who caused the trouble with Rolle was Lemming. Rolle came to the forefront and stated that Lemming was trying to push him to go to Notre Dame. that's why ESPN got rid of him.

but it was the new guy lunginbill, that wrote an article claiming that rolle told him that he eliminated fsu and psu.

looks like that joker picked right up where lemming left off.

I have a hard time understanding why he would consider going to South Carolina if he wants to be the best qb in the nation. Yeah if he goes there I'm sure he would put up numbers but would he develop? It's just hard for me to grasp why Spurrier is considered such a qb guru when he hasn't really developed any good pro qb's.
