Clause for concern? Title gets Tressel a new deal

Friday, December 22, 2006 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- If Ohio State wins the national championship on Jan. 8 and confetti fills the sky at University of Phoenix Stadium, look a little closer. Little pieces of Jim Tressel's contract might be floating through the air.
Section 3.4 of the contract Tressel signed in May includes a clause that voids the agreement if he wins the BCS national title game.
It reads in part, "Coach and the University agree to begin negotiating, in good faith, the terms for a new employment agreement that would supersede this Agreement."

ESPN is also reporting that if JT wins the NC, his buy out clause is also ommitted (meaning that if he wanted to go elsewhere, there would be no buy out for his new team.)

ESPN questioned why he would want such a clause and JT apparently said he was not even aware that it was in there.

In a different interview, JT said that he studied enough film on our kicker that he realized if he takes 6 1/2 steps (instead of 7), he gets more yards on each kick off.

Call me crazy, but I have a hard time believing that a man that meticulous didn't bother to know every word in his contract. Not trying at all to start a shit storm here, but why would JT want that clause in his contract? Possibly a standard thing just to keep your options open?

Edit- here is JT's quote fromthe article...

"I didn't even know it was in there," Tressel said Thursday of the clause.
"I guess that's just one of those things, I'm not sure. But I know I'm right where I want to be. How's that?"

I'm sure he is aware it is in the contract, but was probably his way of avoiding a true answer.

My guess is that it is in there because it was suggested by his agent (removes some barriers from other offers, shich creates more leverage), and he deffered to his agents advice.

There is but one entity that will prevent Tressel from coaching at OSU until he's 70...the Grim Reaper. Then again, when GR approached Tressel, JT would just sit GR's ass on the bench...

Buckeyes coach has a winning touch

By Rusty Miller COLUMBUS , Ohio

The makeshift sign, with crooked letters and bright colors like a third-grader?s class project, was held aloft in the twilight chill of No. 1 Ohio State?s 42-39 victory over archrival and second-ranked Michigan.
"In Tressel We Trust," it said.

With time comes changes, and riches.

What the hell would the Yankees have to pay Ruth and Gehrig with their numbers if they played today?

Our Coach Hayes worked here for basically laborer numbers for pretty much his whole career. I don't think he actually hit the $30,000 mark until the early 1970's and left here in 1978 making a whopping $43,000.

I"m gonna go out on a limb here and predict that after we win the NC this year that this "issue" will never be an issue. Coach Tress isn't here for the $$$.

He's here for "Love Of The Game." and his players that play it. Peace.

This is a win/win for Tressel.

Look for the Cleveland Browns to come after Ohio State coach Jim Tressel if the Buckeyes win the national title. A clause in Tressel's seven-year, $17.1 million contract signed last May voids the package if he wins a national title. The Browns likely would double Tressel's average annual salary of $2.45 million and give one of football's best coaches another challenge after two national titles in his past five seasons in Columbus. Tressel, a Berea, Ohio, native who grew up a Browns fan, also has a $1 million buyout in his current contract. Tressel says he's happy in the college game, but one thing is certain: If OSU wins the national title, Tressel soon will be the highest-paid coach in college football ($3 million-plus per year) or one of the highest-paid in the NFL. . . .

I don't know...JT seems of the Paterno mold. I can't see him leaving for the NFL. And I really wouln't think he would be that successful in the NFL anyway. The strengths of coaches like Paterno/JT is in their ability to relate to players, get parents of kids they are trying to sign like them, getting kids motivated, etc. These types of things aren't really that important in the NFL.

JT leads his team with the fight song with the band after the game...nothing in the NFL can come close to that feeling.

I agree about the CPD being "rumor mongers" in this situation...Tony Grossi looked like an idiot on 1460 with Spielman a couple weeks ago.

Just something else to think about when considering Tressel to the Browns is personnel management......would Tressel let Savage have all the control or would Savage relinquish some control so Tressel can get the players he wants....I can't see Savages ego allowing Tressel to pick all the players he wants...and I could never see Tressel taking players like Winslow or Edwards in a NFL draft

I just don't see JT working in an NFL environment but if he chooses to do it I think he'd be successful, even in Cleveland

thanks for the article. that's exactly what i'd expect from a new york times article on tressel and ohio state, with half of it press about the negative perceptions and aspects. i would have rather seen this part in the first half of the article, but it's there, nonetheless:
Figures used by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport for the graduation rate of black players, however, came from the late 1990s, before Tressel became head coach. Regarding the progress rating, the most recently available data revealed a steady improvement, leaving Ohio State in no jeopardy of losing scholarships, Bruno said.

For the most recent quarter, 60 of Ohio State’s 103 players scored 3.0 or higher on their grade-point averages, the best result in 11 years, Smith said. The overall team grade-point average for the quarter was 2.89; for the 47 black players it was 2.66, “not far off,” Smith said. Of the eight players who graduated most recently, five were black, Smith said.

“Jim has changed the culture,” Smith said of Tressel.
