Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

Author is known as a troll down here, but the article has quotes about Tress from Houston Nutt and Nick Saban.

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/os-bianchi-jim-tressel-0606-20110605,0,2714500.column

Saban went on to call Tressel "one of the finest people in our profession." Which, in itself, should tell you something about the profession … a profession where hypocritical college coaches have seemingly gone out of their way to paint Tressel as some sort of sympathetic figure.

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt on Tressel: "I think he's one of the finest men I know."

Ya think?

Bianchi :shake: Lives to troll. Greguh Doyel's other brother.

In a psychiatric association test of sports blog readers living in Florida, if you said, "Fire ants!" - they'd say, "Bianchi's balls staked to the ant hill covered in jelly!"

Jim Delany has some supportive comments:

"I understand the affection that the state, the university and the players have for him," Delany said. "I don't define the person by any single thing they do, but by a collection of things. But I also knew that this thing standing alone would be judged alone, certainly by the NCAA. There's not a hearing on good deeds."
...
Delany is confident that the guilt lies strictly with Tressel and not with others at Ohio State, notably athletic director Gene Smith or president E. Gordon Gee.
"I would just say this: As much as a person can be certain of what they don't know, I'm certain," Delany said. "In the case of Gordon and Gene, let's put it this way: When they had information about the tattoo situation, it went to the NCAA. When they had information about Jim, it went to the NCAA. And pretty much in real time I knew about it.
"Based on their history, their past and how they acted, I have full confidence in them as to their integrity and to doing the right thing at the right time in regard to NCAA violations."

This one statement is the hard truth that in handsight separates the responses between the "not all in" and the "stands with" camps, as it were, on the board and elsewhere.

It's not so much that the huge amount of good that Coach has done is not appreciated - it's just that it has so very little to do with the NCAA rules violation and the outcome of the investigation.

And the support of the Big-10 Administration - the evidence that the Big-10 will provide to the NCAA supporting tOSU's submission that is self reported as soon as all violations were known - is all very good for the institution.

Thats what I took from that....I love Tress and I am appreciative of the last ten years but the best thing for the school at this point is that he seems to be at the heart of the violation...the big ten needs Ohio State to be good......While i am sad I am now behind Luke and hoping that the NCAA looks at Tress's mis deeds as rogue and that Ohio State is in controll and moving forward in a positive mannor

I can't wait for November. Fickell vs Hoke. Interesting matchup. Who would have thought 2 years ago that this would be the coaching matchup?

One other thing that should be evident in this whole mess: Tressel made one huge mistake (failure to report an NCAA violation, accompanied by misrepresentation on compliance report) that could in itself warrant dismissal - or not. But his dismissal resulted not only from this error (obviously; this was known when Gee made his infamous "hope he doesn't fire me" comment) but also the shitstorm raised by SI's "revelations" regarding vehicles and other past violations, none of which was specifically tied to Coach Tressel.

The "totality of the situation" included not only Tressel's misjudgment but what now seems like utter incompetence on the part of the compliance department. It appears to me that the compliance people bent over backwards to protect student-athlete privacy, to their detriment from the compliance perspective. A less privacy-concerned bunch would have badgered the players unceasingly about all these vehicles that failed to pass muster from the standpoint of registration with the athletic department.

Does this all mean Tressel "fell on the sword" for Ohio State? I can see how reasonable people could come to either a yes or no answer on this one.

Smith is in charge of Compliance, and Tressel, and therefore should be held accountable for his and the Compliance Department's ineptitude in this situation, plain and simple. I disagree with Delaney here.

Gee and Smith both should be held accountable for the abysmal way in which the overall situation (circus) and media relations has played out.

Absolutely. Smith is in charge of the athletic department, and the buck should land on his desk. It's not about firing him over a bad press conference. It's about making a decision based upon gross incompetencies in his department and abysmal handling of this whole mess once it broke. I have to admit, I was never on board with him from the beginning. I just really felt his primary activity was auditioning for the Notre Dame job. Now, I've come to believe that he's just really, really in over his head.

Gee is a tougher call. Nobody--short of maybe Les Wexner himself--was happier to see Gee return than me. Gee 2.0 has, however, been less than stellar, and it goes beyond his asinine and embarrassing "dismiss me" comment, the "sisters of the poor" nonsense or even the handling of this whole affair. Lacking any direct involvement in some from of cover up though, Gee will survive....but only if the powers that be determine that he's more an asset moving into the official portion of the fundraising campaign than a liability.

Delaney is stating this in hopes that this is all pinned on Tress and LOIC does not become an issue and their most powerful and profitable athletic department is not crippled by sanctions. While it is clear to most Smith is part of this problem the Big Ten and Ohio State want to create a case that its Tress's fault get slapped on the wrist and move on. IMO the best scenario is just that...the NCAA sees that Tress was the cancer and it has been removed then after a decision on punishment is made Smith is let go and we begin anew

But is it the right scenario. I've been pretty clear about what I thought should be Tressel's ultimate fate. I don't, however, believe that all this should be conveniently dumped on him as some ncaa lone gunman--even if it mitigates our upcoming sanctions. We need to what's right now, not what's political or might lessen our sanctions or is in the best interests of the Big Ten Network, and that includes a thorough look at the lack of oversight coming out of our AD and his compliance department.

Gregory Peck has a great line in The Guns of Navarone along the lines of which, the BoT should be thinking: "You got me in the mood to use this thing and by God, if you don?t think of something, I?ll use it on you."

The best scenario for me is that we dont get crippling sanctions...the program cleans up with out them so I can watch a good team take the field....If sanctions can be mitigated they should be. I think that we can correct what ever problems we have with out losing the competetiveness of the football team for 6 years....I think the BoT needs to clean house....after the dust settles with the NCAA
