Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

Jim Tressel spoke at the Colerain Booster Stag back in 2005 and I had the chance to meet him.
My friend, like me, is a diehard Buckeye fan. But he could not attend because his wife suffers from siezures and was on a strong medication that required observation. I called my friend on my cell phone and then I told Coach Tressel the situation my friend was in and asked if he would mind speaking to him on the phone. No hesitation. Coach talked to him about OSU football for a good five minutes.
I can't honestly think of another coach who would have done something like that for a complete stranger. This is how I will always remember Tressel.
Thank you, coach...and Go Bucks.

This is a horribly sad day.

Although its the culmination of several issues, and many have expected it, this is still fucking terrible.

I realize there are some people who need to lash out at coach and put themselves on some type of pedestal, but for god's sake, can we keep from bashing him?

I hope the posters that bash Tressel are dealt with as quickly and as abruptly by the mods as when players are bashed. In this whole situation the bashing of Tressel has been allowed to go to far.

I really haven't noticed much of what I would consider to be bashing of JT. If we see it, it will be dealt with accordingly.

I think I now know what it must have felt when Woody was fired... Such an amazing, amazing coach and an amazing person who was derailed by one stupid thing. So disappointing but he gave us an amazing 10 years, and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been able to see a few OSU games, including one against TSUN (a win, of course) during the Tressel era.

Coach Tressel is a good man and a great coach, and I am saddened that the gossip mill kept him from having a fair chance to make his case in August. People do make mistakes and have to bear the consequences. Being pushed off a cliff ought not be one of them.

I became a Buckeye fan when I heard about all the good things Coach Tressel was bringing to the program off the field, since I didn't really care about football itself at that point. I don't think he's perfect, but I do think he's the best there is, and if he continues coaching I'll be following along.

Better not leave us.

I don't know why, but I just have a feeling that years from now (maybe not within the next 5 or so), Jim Tressel will be Dotting the I in Ohio Stadium.

Regardless of what new information comes out or whatever sanctions come out, I don't know why I get that feeling (he'll Dot the I).

Looks like ol' JT has to fall on the sword to try and help Ohio State avoid big-time sanctions. Shame it had to end this way, but I doubt the university gave him any choice.

Wonder how the Tat-5 are feeling these days. Probably a lot of guilt going on there.

Damn good coach, just a big shame this all is. If he had just reported it they'd be past all this, maybe the guys get a few games suspended, that's it.

Thanks to Coach Tressel for one of the most stirring decades in Ohio State football history. On and off the field, he and his players have made us proud, until this recent episode. I am deeply sorry that it has come to this.

I can understand why some folks will say that the players who got him in this mess should never walk on the field again in an Ohio State uniform. However, that would give currency to the media storm that brought us to this point, after the players and Coach Tressel violated the trust placed in them.

The way forward is now quite uncertain and those who think that the healing will begin may be very surprised by the coming year. I suspect that this means there is more substance to some of the additional allegations and that the storm will now grow rather than subside. It will be very surprising if Ohio State can hang onto its recruits for such a long time until the coaching search is finalized.

One thing is for sure, the Buckeyes better be prepared to play against TSUN this year. A statement needs to be made.

On the field, I do not expect a great step down immediately. The coaching staff are essentially intact. The system need not be changed. At least one distraction has been removed. Otherwise, I am not sure what this means for Ohio State football or athletics going forward. At a minimum, some of the recruits who have given verbals will be answering lots of phone calls again this week.

In the end, Coach Tressel's demise was yet another teaching moment about ethics. I wish him well and Godspeed in the next chapter of his life. His influence will be sadly missed at Ohio State.

What disappoints me the most about this ending is how everything Tressel did in 10 years will now be tainted in the eyes of many outside of Ohio, and this final act will be brought up every time. Hell, I still hear about Woody Hayes taking a swing at a Clemson player, not the 27 years of success and the hundreds of young men he helped mold over the years.

For a generation of young fans outside of Ohio, that's all they know about Woody - the punch. The same will happen to Jim Tressel, unfortunately, over time. Their place in Buckeye lore is sound, but both men deserved better national legacies. :(
