Jim Bollman (Stay calm and run Dave)

What are you talking about we could have kept the ball out of their hands to not even give them a chance to come back. But bollman's playcalling has no balance. When you take the ball out of your best playmakers hands nearly the entire second half. They preach balance but they don't call it. I'm not calling for 50/50 but Wisconsin was loading the box big time late in the game.

Wisconsin was loading the box ALL game game. If Boom wasn't one of the best tailbacks in the country that game could have been ugly.

Hey Bollman, its called a SCREEN PASS.
I swear the first time we run one of those it'll go for a TD, guaranteed.

The kid has ice in his veins let him play. Stop handcuffing him!
That could have been debated before last night. According to the OSU's line Miller was playing scared against Michigan State. But... he started gaining confidence in Nebraska and last night showed that he has gained total confidence to lead this team. I think we might see Bollman let up on the reins (a bit) the next few weeks against Indiana and Purdue and go from there.

Don't think we should be hard on Bollman after this one. The running game was really effective in the 2nd half despite them knowing what was coming. With a late lead, I'll take that over the post-Brax injury offense in the Nebraska game.

We also saw some ingenuity in the run game. The pistol counter play was run 6-7 times. The play was so slow to develop, and required Braxton to rotate 270 degrees to make the hand off. But it was very successful due to an overaggressive defense.

And then OSU comes out in the pistol on 3rd and 2. The defense has to be thinking counter, which is going to slow them up a bit. And Bollman calls a speed option for the first time all game (all season?). It was a tendency breaker and the perfect play call against a defense that was expecting the counter. Great call JB.

I know they loaded it all game that's why I don't know why we continually run against it 85% of the time. And we had very little success with the run game in the first half. The passing game is starting to finally catch up to the run game after being stagnant all year. You gotta have some balance. Yeah we won but the game could have been called much better on Bollman's end.

nothing better than beating them at their own game....

as for the play calling, I think in the 3rd qtr you can complain by some of lack of passing, especially down at the goaline, but near the end of the 4th, I'm glad they were running it, I know Braxton is ice but he's still a freshmen, and freshmen mistakes will still happen, no matter how good he is....

I remember 08 PSU with Pryor, not only the QB sneak fumble, but they were driving late in the game to win it? (i don't remember the score) and he threw up a pass in the endzone where no OSU wr was near and picked it off...It was Pryor's best passing game to date, and yet he made Freshmen mistakes

Overall last nights was a pretty well called offensive game. But, I only remember the one pass on 1st down, the long one that hit Philly in the facemask :smash: I would have liked to see something across the middle to Stoney, or a screen play on 1st down once or twice a game as well to keep the D off balance. In my IMO, there were too many 3rd an longs that were only converted due to Braxton's elusiveness.

All that said, great victory and [censored] that [Mark May] head Mark May, and [censored] Bucky

Hell Nebraska looked like they just saw the ghost of Michael Jackson when we ran that TE screen.

I thought that with the lead, conservative play calling was exactly what we needed. Frosh QB, young receivers, and a senior leader who is a 1000 yard, all big ten rusher... Who are you going to give the ball to? Turnovers are HUGE in games like that, if for nothing more than the momentum swing (See Jordan Hall's fumble.) I liked the idea of lining up and smashing it down their throats and spreading them out and let Braxton make plays with his legs.

Braxton is still VERY green as a passer. He struggles at times just to throw a good ball but his biggest problem is confidence passing the ball. You can see it clearly when he's throwing to routes that develop. Rather than passing the ball in anticipation of an open receiver, he waits until that receiver IS open, which is usually too late. This type of thing leads to interceptions and for that reason, I love staying conservative with a lead late in games. Good game plan IMO.

I was disappointed we didn't see more wildcat considering how well it worked.

Why was the wildcat more successful than the base offense? Putting Herron at QB and splitting Brax telegraphs the play, so it should be easier to defend. I just don't see the point in running the wildcat formation when you have a dual threat QB as elusive as Braxton Miller in the game.

Just because it was predictable doesn't mean it wasn't working. Boom has been a beast out of that formation by picking his lanes and exploding. He made Borland look like a 5th grade girl last night on one of those plays.

Ya, it was clearly working, but I'm confused as to why.

And yea, both Boom and Braxton had ankle breaking moves against the mighty Borland

I just don't understand why when the universal wisdom when you have an inexperienced or limited QB is to make the game as easy as possible for him by having him make easy throws to tight ends, backs etc

and our inexperienced, limited QBs throw a steady diet of deep outs lol
