Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

Was watching the local news yesterday here in columbus and they were talking about the new uni's. First according the the report the players actually helped to design the uniforms, and several players made comments that seem to back that up. All of the players talked about how much they liked the uniforms, how they fit, looked, etc.

Whether or not we fans like them, a colleague of mine observed yesterday that the players opinion of them is what matters. He reasoned, it gives the players something to be excited about. They're always going to be "up" for the Michigan game, of course, but this is just a little something else to get their blood pumping, maybe. When you've won 5 in a row, perhaps this is just the edge that keeps them "involved" to the level they need to be.

Now, I personally don't know how I feel about the suggestion that it takes a alternative uniform to get a guy up for this game. But.. the rationale, in and of itself, doesn't seem misplaced. At least not to me.

Especially when:

"I can't wait to put those on," linebacker Austin Spitler said. "Those uniforms are awesome. If you look good, you play good, so I think a lot of guys are feeling like they'll look good, so maybe we'll play a little better."

Just sayin...

I'm just getting negative MOJO from the whole alternate jersey against scUM idea.

I can already see the this happenening 10 years from now.

Its November 22, 2019.

College gameday is in Columbus. Lee Corso (yes he is still alive) says, "remember back in 2009 when a lame duck coach named Rich Rod headed into the game with no chance to win or save his job. Then OSU takes the field in the those alternate jersey's. Yes you all remember, the "Jersey Game". Rich rod pulls off the upset, saving his job and goes on to win several more games against JT in his tenure there before jumping ship to Auburn where has never won a game in 3 seasons."

Who cares what the players like? Who cares what the company (Nike) that puts mucho dinero into the hands of the athletic department for scholarships wants? All that matters is what the couch potato fan wants.

As for superstitions relating to what uni the team wears, all I can say is ...

Then quit fuckin' jinxing us.

:tongue2:

BKB - great post. I did not know the players had an input on the uniforms. Very cool.

Lachey, Krenzel & co summed it up best. They don't have a problem with it, but call it what it is... jersey sales, not a tribute. They paid $26 million for the right to order OSU around like this, unfortunately.
Although Nike paid that amount for jersey rights, you'd figure that OSU had the final "yay/nay" on the product.

It is not about selling jerseys, otherwise, they would not have sold out in an hour, and they would have had a higher asking price.
No, it most certainly is about selling jerseys...Nike simply underestimated our fan base's loyalty to tradition. If it were truly a tribute to the 1954 team, then the jerseys would've looked like the 1945 jerseys, not the elementary school Microsoft Paint designed jersey we have for The Game. I wouldn't wear one if you gave it to me free...seriously.

I get what you're saying, but the players would also love it if osu regularly wore all black uniforms... And/or had 1 full length sleeve/pant with the other cutting off at the shoulderblade/knee.

Nike would also love to make osu wear alternates with huge leaves on the shoulder, a giant Buckeye on the helmet, and 5 different helmets.

Should we do that too because they like it?

Btw Max, I'm pretty sure you've secured the number one spot as the jersey specialist.

I don't think they underestimated anything...the sales speak for themselves. I think the people that don't like the uniform are in the minority. OSU changes their uniforms about every 3 years as it is. This shouldn't be a surprise for anyone.

The thing with that though is that it's not drastic changes, they are still classy uniforms. It's not something like Cincy, Cal or Oregons where they are just throwing random crap over the uniforms that somewhat have a connection to the university.

Ohio State brings in a lot more money from alumni & fans than the $4Mil or so that Nike adds to the coffers each year.

...and you have access to accurate sales data?

I can't understand this argument.. if it were about selling jerseys - stores would have a shit-load of them stocked. All I keep seeing here is posters calling around and can't buy them anywhere. How can it be about selling jerseys if no one can buy them? I don't get it?

Don't give the fan base too much credit..

Agreed. Piss poor way for Nike to pass these uni's off..

Don't underestimate:

a) Creating demand - if they are in stock everywhere, they can lose their cache faster. If they're out of stock everywhere, then when they do pop up, they're a really special find that you have to grab before they go out of stock again.

or

b) Incompetence - simply not planning properly.

They apparently think we're idiots and don't notice Nike doing this across the nation without tributes.
