Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

I think it's pretty obvious that I consider a change to be a change.

A change in size, shape or location of any graphic, number, logo or design is a change.

I never thought I'd see the day when someone would ask in all seriousness if I believe a change is a change.

Maybe a change is really a bear, hell if I know.

actually you are very wrong

this is change:

Like I said, this doesn't bother me as much as some others. I would prefer that they didn't change, and a little suprised the University is allowing this, but I won't be all up in arms unless they start fitting the boys with those hideous Arena League concoctions that Va Tech and Florida were sporting last year.

That would piss me off...

My $0.02: I think the new design pays tribute to the Buckeyes of past. It doesn't look tacky, it doesn't have one sleve scarlet, one sleve gray. It doesn't have piping. I'm not a huge fan of the replica jerseys, but I think that the new design will look slick on the players, on top of pads.

The bottom line: these new jerseys will help the players - whether it be breaking tackles or keeping cool, that is all that matters.

Okay, deep breaths.

As pointed out, it's the same stripe that's on the pants and helmets, just added to the jersey.

It's also the same stripe that Art's jersey has on that SI cover, so it's not as if it's unprecedented.

The helmet and pants will still be the same, I presume, meaning that we're still Scarlet and Grey.

The shade of red they've used does NOT look like scarlet to me, and the jersey is giving me a Louisville Cardinals vibe. Some grey would mitigate that, I'll agree.

All in all, for a Nike re-do, we got off lucky. Let's count our blessings, here.

Is it a major change? Yes, to a degree. However, it's historically consistent one with the 1980 uniforms:

I'm okay with it.

Just count your lucky stars that Nike decided to go "retro" with our jersies rather than that "futuristic" virus they've sent to Oregon, Florida, and Va Tech. Those futuristic jersies only work once every three years or so (see Miami or BYU).

Us Buckeyes pride ourselves on tradition, and it's hard for us to see one of our proudest traditions, the very armor our warriors wear, change. As far as many of us are concerned, it was perfect the way it was, and there's no use in changing something that was already perfect- especially for the simple switch to Nike's dri-fit material.

I think a lot of us are still pretty shocked by how ugly those "replica jersies" are. In my mind though, those game jersies aren't that bad. I'd rather they kept the stripes we've had the past 20 years, but bringing back the old stripes brings back memories of my first Buckeye games at the Horseshoe. Though I'm skeptical how long this change will last, I welcome bringing back an old winning tradition of Buckeye lore. I mean, when you think about it, how many national championships did we win in the post 85-86 jersies? And how many national championships did we win in the old "retro" jersies under Woody? That's a winning tradition as far as I'm concerned. Hell, Woody might give a little smile up there seeing his boys wearing the old duds again. Now bring back the old grey basketball uni's while you're at it, Nike :)

Extra food for thought: The last time Miami won a national championship, it was the year that Nike changed their jersies. Coincidence?? I think not.

------------
And for all of you that are still pissed off at the new "ugly jersies", then DON'T BUY THEM and TELL YOUR FRIENDS NOT TO WHILE YOU'RE AT IT!! Nike will get the message. It's seriously that simple... and I think they're gonna get that message here in a few months when those ugly replicas aren't selling like they hoped

The authentics look great and I can't wait to see how they look with the rest of the uniform. I don't care for the replicas, but since neither the team, nor myself will ever wear one, they don't bother me.

Well, I was gone all night last night, so I missed the previous 10 pages of complaining and arguing about what a change is. My $0.02: They don't look terrible.....in fact, I kind of like the change.

Blasphemy!!!

I just the biggest thing for me is that I was expecting MUCH MUCH worse than this. Anytime I shudder to think about what Nike can come up with I start convulsing...

But yeah, as many others have said, I'll hold judgement till I see it in full pads, and at least it is a throwback not futuristic.

There is obviously different views on this subject and while I can see the points on both sides, personally I think the change in the uniforms is good and that it still maintains the tradition of Ohio State unlike some of the other schools who have drastically changed their uniforms, VTech and Miami come to mind of the top of my head.

Some people like change, others do not. I like the change in the uniforms.

Tweaked, but not changed, I can live with that... and in reality this "tweak" is radical for two reasons only, new material and dropping gray from the shoulder stripes. What bugs the hell out of me is that gray is unigue... think of all the blue and white, red and white, blue and yellow/gold, black and gold, red and black teams out there... scarlet and gray is unique, colors we share only with one other school in all of division 1.. you see a photo on a magazine and you instantly know if it was taken at a buckeye game...brand recognition...

that's why I respect Michigan's uniform... it's destinctive, stands alone from all the other blue and yellow/gold teams out there.

This seems to be giving away our own "brand recognition" and seems to be caving in to Nike's throw-some-black-in-there brand recognition, making Nike more/as important as the team.

As Tip O'Neil stated, "All politics is local." Politics decided on black stripes and it's going to take politics to get the gray back. After all, the scarlet helmet lasted but one season.

Black is already on the helmet and pants. Is it really that radical of Nike to have a little black stripe on the sleeve? It's not like black wasn't already an element of the uniform and they just threw that in there. Maybe they should change the helmets to gray instead of silver.
