Jerry Kill (ex-HC, New Mexico St., Minny)

I just still can't get over that he came back to the job after having a seizure on the sideline two years ago. There were only two ways this could end. This is the more appealing of the two. Better late than never.

Still, right now today and without age or health restrictions, if I had to choose one of the other to coach the Buckeyes, I'd pick Mason over Kill.
Yes he did come back 2 years ago, but the attacks have now been more frequent. That's the reason for the departure. I'm not saying he would ever become a huge winner, but he wasn't going to leave unless forced out, and this forced him out. Sad.

Honestly, I've always thought that Kill was a little overrated as a coach since he got to Minnesota. They might be better off without him.

I still can't believe that Minnesota hired him, whether they did it knowing about his health concerns or whether they didn't do their due diligence. I can't believe anyone thought after the 2013 incident that keeping him on as the head coach could have a positive outcome. (Other than winning the CoY award in the same year that another coach in the conference went undefeated, of course.)

I think Jerry Kill is probably a better story than he is a coach and the Gophers might be better off without him.

There. I said it.

You don't seem to have the first clue about how difficult it is to recruit in Minnesota. The guy led Minnesota to back-to-back eight win seasons. That alone should tell you he knows what he's doing.

In a weak B1G with a weak Michigan and separated by division from OSU and PSU so he only had to face each of them once, Kill almost managed to match Mason's winning percentage. He has 2 total wins against OSU, Michigan (1), MSU, PSU (1), and Wisconsin. His wins came against historically bad teams for their respective programs.

He won 14 conference games in 4.5 years. Some were predicting he'd win the West this year. Now he's retiring after a 1-2 start in conference after getting shut out by Northwestern and losing to 3-5 Nebraska. Michigan, at OSU, and at Iowa are coming up. Am I too cynical for thinking he would have delayed his retirement if Illinois, Rutgers, and Purdue were the next three games on the schedule?

Yes. You are. Minny was a dead program under Brewster and Kill immediately made them respectable. Is he UFM or Tressel? Nope. But he's solid nonetheless. Nothing about this is about him being afraid of pending losses or who he's playing, get over yourself...

I don't know... my immediate thought is that if you don't like Jerry Kill as a person, there is something very seriously wrong in some synapses or in the soul.

I loved what Kill said last year on BTN after Ohio State beat Alabama (prompted by a comment that OSU passes the eye test in terms of looking at them "on the hoof"): "When we played them, I wouldn't allow my team to look down at the other end of the field at them during warm ups."

My son would not watch a Minnesota game live because he didn't want to "see a man die on the sideline". I gotta admit that the possibility scared me too.

If you are in the habit of perusing other B1G forums, it's interesting to see the reaction. I think if your team was one that Kill beat, there is less sympathy expressed, but if he was not a problem for your team, much more sympathy. Human behavior is curious.

I still remember the conversations from them wanting to fire Mason because he obviously couldn't get them to the next level.

I seem to remember they played Iowa State in bowls it seemed like every year...both programs weren't happy with that, and then both went in the shits

I vote that Minnesota hires Brady Hoke, this week and they beat Michigan. And then they fire Hoke to get a real coach.
Hm. Maryland is looking for a coach and they play Michigan every year. I hope they hire Hoke.

- Kill is, at best, an average coach for P5 schools.
- Above Average compared to peers in the West division.
- He's another shining example of how Big CotY is a participation/sympathy award. Has more to do with expectations than on-field success.
- He seems like a very genuine and nice guy
- His retirement has nothing to do with his record and everything to do with his health

Unable to reach agreement, Jerry Kill and Minnesota part ways

The last any of us saw or heard from Jerry Kill, it was his gut-wrenching, tear-inducing retirement press conference back in October. We would see him again sometime in an official capacity for Minnesota, but no one knew how or when that would happen. Those details would be worked out in time.

“In time” around, and the details were never worked out.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Kill and Minnesota are parting ways after the two sides were unable to reach an agreement on what the Gophers’ former head coach’s role would be.

“I visited with the president, and it was very professional in manner,” Kill told the paper. “He would like me to speak on behalf of the university, raise money and teach a class or two. I really appreciate that offer, but I want to be involved with athletics. I’ve been involved with athletics my whole life, and I want to be around the kids more than anything.

“That wasn’t part of the offer. I understand that, but that was the deal-breaker for me.”

We'll see just how good he was after Claeys has a couple of seasons. I suspect they won't be pretty. Claeys looked so in over his head at times, it was borderline sad. The scUM game alone should have eliminated him from contention for the full-time gig.

Kill may not have been a great fit for a blue-blood program, but for a perennial also-ran like Minny, he was. Wringing back-to-back 8 win seasons in a "BCS" conference out of a roster full of 2 and 3 star kids is an admirable job, and he may have done it again in 2016. They were 4-3 when he stepped down. He probably could have beaten scUM, and he may have eeked out 3 more wins...they nearly beat Iowa and were competitive against an average Wiscy team under Claeys.

It's nearly impossible to win there. Mason did it occasionally, but still only managed 8 wins three times in ten years. I think it's a serious longshot that Kill would ever have made them a serious competitor due to the constraints of that job, but he would have at least kept them competitive within their division most years. It's hard to find a guy that can do that there, and giving Claeys the job was a fucking popcorn fart.

If nothing else, I'm pretty sure Mr. Kill knew what a freaking game clock was.

This is spot-on. Junior high kickball coaches could have better managed the game clock at the end of the Minnesota/Michigan game, and thus allowed their team to punch it in from the one-yard line for the win. Claeys' complete ineptitude absolutely cost them that game.
