Jerry Kill (ex-HC, New Mexico St., Minny)

Honestly, I've always thought that Kill was a little overrated as a coach since he got to Minnesota. They might be better off without him.

I still can't believe that Minnesota hired him, whether they did it knowing about his health concerns or whether they didn't do their due diligence. I can't believe anyone thought after the 2013 incident that keeping him on as the head coach could have a positive outcome. (Other than winning the CoY award in the same year that another coach in the conference went undefeated, of course.)

I think Jerry Kill is probably a better story than he is a coach and the Gophers might be better off without him.

There. I said it.
Disagree.

Of course I think any B1G team should aim higher but he seems to have been a decent coach for a middle/lower tier B1G program got them to bowls 3/4 full seasons (still possible to end up 4/5 but doubtful) He wasn't a home run hire but I don't think they will get anyone much better.

Gophers head coaches post Bernie Bierman (.727):
George Hauser 15-11-1 .577
Wes Fesler 10-13-4 .435
Murray Warmath 87-78-7 .526
Cal Stoll 39-39-0 .500
Joe Salem 19-35-1 .352
Lou Holtz 10-12-0 .455
John Gutekunst 29-36-2 .441
Jim Wacker 16-39-0 .291
Glen Mason 64-57-0 .529
Tim Brewster 15-30-0 .333
Jeff Horton (Interim) 2-3-0 .400
Jerry Kill 25-26-0 .490

My money is on the next hire's record looking a lot more like Wacker/Brewster.

I still remember the conversations from them wanting to fire Mason because he obviously couldn't get them to the next level.

In a weak B1G with a weak Michigan and separated by division from OSU and PSU so he only had to face each of them once, Kill almost managed to match Mason's winning percentage. He has 2 total wins against OSU, Michigan (1), MSU, PSU (1), and Wisconsin. His wins came against historically bad teams for their respective programs.

He won 14 conference games in 4.5 years. Some were predicting he'd win the West this year. Now he's retiring after a 1-2 start in conference after getting shut out by Northwestern and losing to 3-5 Nebraska. Michigan, at OSU, and at Iowa are coming up. Am I too cynical for thinking he would have delayed his retirement if Illinois, Rutgers, and Purdue were the next three games on the schedule?

I'm about as cynical as they come and I'd say yes, you are maybe being a wee tad over the top on this one.

The guy was obviously devastated and if he was scared of pending losses he would have quit many seasons and many seizures ago.

I just still can't get over that he came back to the job after having a seizure on the sideline two years ago. There were only two ways this could end. This is the more appealing of the two. Better late than never.

Still, right now today and without age or health restrictions, if I had to choose one of the other to coach the Buckeyes, I'd pick Mason over Kill.
