Japan hit with 9.0 Earthquake and 45 ft Tsunami

wow CNN is now showing a massive water swirl that looks somewhat like a Hurricane and some poor bastard is on a boat going towards the middle of the swirl. I hope for his sake there's not a massive sinkhole causing it....

It's a tidal maelstrom caused by the currents. Look up the 'old sow' whirlpool between Deer Island & Eastport Maine.

Oh and...

And we awake to a beautiful day here in Hawaii (great weather, first day of spring break for me, Bucks grind out a win). Initial reports show some damage along some coastal roads on Oahu. Sounds like Maui and the Big Island caught more of a surge, and there's some greater damage there. Fortunately, no reports of any injuries. I've been through this before a couple of times, but last night just seemed like the real deal. I guess the fact that it was at night, hearing those sirens wailing, and watching the footage out of Japan, it just had a different feel to it than the last time.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan. After watching some of those videos, it's just unbelievable how destructive these things can be. I live a few miles inland from the ocean, in a non-inundation zone, but you better take this Mark May seriously. For those wondering about my esteemed colleague from the wrong side of island, Mililani lives further inland and at a higher elevation. He probably slept through the whole damn thing.

Hope those along the Pacific coast of the mainland are doing well. Thanks to all of those who expressed their concern. I've had enough excitement for this week.

Hell no, fuckin' sirens.

As 808 said, I live about 5 miles line-of-sight from shore and my house is surveyed as being at an elevation of 993 feet, so no worries about flooding for me. Where 808 lives is another story...the town he lives in is very susceptible to wave surges.

From the Pentagon regarding US forces in the region...

Ships in port in Yokosuka stationed linehandlers to adjust to water-level changes in Yokosuka harbor. No damage has been reported to any of the ships.

Ships in Guam have been directed to leave if possible, or to recall personnel and adjust lines during changes in sea level.

Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force headquarters in Misawa was briefly evacuated. It is without power and operating from a generator.

Amphibious Force headquarters in White Beach, Okinawa, moved its watch to higher ground at Kadena Air Base in preparation for a forecasted tsunami.

USS Blue Ridge (taking on humanitarian supplies in Singapore)h, USS Essex (had just arrived in Malaysia with 31st MEU) & USS Tortuga (Sasebo Japan) are all preparing to steam towards the affected area to render assistance.

Here's about the worst that happened. This guys is a total fucking idiot for standing on the sea wall while the surge was coming in. By the way, he's standing a couple hundred yards from the swim start of the Kona Ironman, and about 50 yards from where Folanator had his Infiniti tent set up...

Tsunami surge in Kona

Reminiscent of the idiot during the Chicago blizzard who went down to the beach to see the waves and was swept out into freezing waters in the middle of the night.

Except he got trumped by the guy in CA who went out to take photos and, last I heard, never washed back into shore.

There were 4 other idiots who did something similar....they found 3, one of which was dead and the other guy hasn't been found yet.
