Japan hit with 9.0 Earthquake and 45 ft Tsunami

Yikes! 808 Buck--I haven't seen any mention on the news of any quake off Hawaii. Was it aftershocks from Japan?
Hope you & yours stay safe.

One plus is that Japan has been hyper-proactive about building for strong quakes, so there should have been fewer injuries or deaths due to building collapse. That nasty tsunami wave is a different deal, however--no way to build against that.

Depending on the final assessment of the measurement, the news is saying this could be the fifth to seventh strongest quake ever recorded.

We all better pray the Cascadias or New Madrid don't get any funny ideas from their Pacific Rim brethren.

edit, 6AM--News just said Hawaii had a 4.5 mag.

Japan declares an emergency at a Nuclear plant in the wake of the 8.9 Earthquake in Sendai.

Fire broke out in the Onagawa nuclear plant, there was also a loss of power to the core-cooling unit. Reports indicate they have activated emergency core-cooling at the facility, but details are (unsurprisingly) scant at this time.

Reuters) - Japan said on Friday a cooling function at Tokyo Electric Power's (9501.T) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was not working after a major earthquake but that it was trying to get backup power for cooling.
The government has declared an emergency situation as a precaution but there was no radioactive leakage and no damage from the cooling problem was expected at this stage, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a news conference. (Reporting by Chisa Fujioka and Risa Maeda; Editing by Edwina Gibbs)

Japan earthquake and tsunami: fire breaks out at nuclear plant in Onagawa

A fire broke out in the turbine building of Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, on Friday after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake triggered a huge tsunami.

It was not immediately clear if there was a risk of a radioactive leak as a result of the fire at the plant operated by Tohoku Electric Power. Miyagi prefecture was one of the areas worst hit by the tsunami.

Kyodo also reported that an emergency core-cooling unit had been activated at Fukushima nuclear plant, without giving further details.

Earlier Friday Prime Minister Naoto Kan had said no radiation leaks have been detected from Japan's nuclear power stations after the massive quake struck the country.

Four Japanese nuclear power plants closest to the epicentre of the quake have been safely shut down, the UN atomic watchdog said Friday.
From MSNBC:
TOKYO ? The Japanese government issued a state of emergency at a nuclear power plant Friday after a cooling system failure in the wake of the giant earthquake and tsunami off the east coast of the Pacific nation.
An administrator at the Tohoku Electric Power Co's Onagawa facility said the process for the cooling reactor is "not going as planned," adding that "nuclear emergency situation" has been declared. The company asked people nearby to stay calm, the official TV news channel NHK reported.

Pictures of the nuclear power plant seem promised by news page links - but don't turn up, other damaged areas instead being pictures, including a burning oil refinery - all followig pictures from MSNBC link above ...

Meanwhile Hawaii's Governor asking residents to take the Tsunami warning seriously.

As Hawaiians braced for a tsunami, government geologists reported that a 4.6 magnitude earthquake was unleashed at about 11 p.m. by the restive Kilauea Volcano, which has been spewing lava and triggering small seismic tremors since it rumbled back to life last Saturday.
Scientists said the latest temblor at Kilauea, centered on the volcano's southern flank, posed no threat of a tsunami.
Ocean waves up to 6 feet above normal sea level were detected by deep-ocean gauges near Wake island, Midway and Guam in the North Pacific, said Chip McCreary, a spokesman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The island of Kauai was expected to be the first hit in Hawaii because the tsunami was advancing from the west and would likely take 20 to 30 minutes to cross the entire state, McCreary said.

That video is both horrifying and awe-inspiring. It looks so much worse than I first thought it would be.

According to a company alert (we have a new location in Hawaii), it hasn't been too bad there yet, and they aren't expecting it to be too bad right now. Nothing is expected to hit the California coast according to that alert.
