Jake Diebler (Head Coach)

The things which I held out strong hope for this year.....energy, speed & transition, and tough defense......just aren't a part of the program still. There is very little different from what it was under Holtmann. If we hit our 3s at a 50% rate we win going away. If not, we lose.

We don't get good sets or inbounds plays or anything dialed up. Just get into the motion and find an open guy

Ohio State Athletic Director Ross Bjork Says Jake Diebler is Meeting Expectations: “Jake's Doing a Great Job”

It hasn't been a perfect season for Ohio State basketball, but the Buckeyes are positioned to secure an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time in three years as March rolls on.

That’s progress in the eyes of Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork. During a radio appearance on 97.1 the Fan on Thursday, Bjork backed coach Jake Diebler.

"Jake's doing a great job and really meeting our expectations," Bjork said. "And now we just need to win those games that we were close on. And we know we can do it moving forward."

Just sayin': I'm thinking that Bork should raise his expectations on what he expects Diebler to accomplish, etc. The three blowout games were ugly and there wasn't a noticeable (i.e. significant) improvement in play over the course of the season. Basically the team is going to finish 9th or 10th in the B1G which is where they finished last year (i.e. 9th). In addition, it's not a stretch to say (overall) the players Diebler got out of the transfer portial were a disappointment especially for the large amount of NIL money (that I ass/u/me) they are getting.

Just sayin ... it usually takes time to build a winning program when you've had a mediocre one. Progress can be hard to make, especially when you lose 3 of your best 4 players off of an NIT team. I would agree we should have high expectations for the program, but this isn't the year to have them.

What about next year? Should we be forgiving and ok with it if we are in the same position come March? I don't think so.

Nope nope....Ohio State is totally a destination program right now....if Deibs isn't getting 7 5 star recruits every year he should be fired.. yarrrrggggggg!!!

I agree with you. Rome wasn't built or rebuilt in a day.

Well, let's see what happens first. If they don't have unexpected personnel losses and are in the same position in March as this year, then I would say that it would be more fair to question the coach.

It's just hard to get enthused about the current direction of a program that made a completely lazy hire of a assistant of the former fired failed coach, who in year one just looked like a extension of said former failed fired coach.

I don't think anybody is saying this. We are saying that being in this position in March every year is not acceptable. Nobody is saying Ohio State should be Kentucky or Duke but acting like we are some also ran low level power conference caliber program is absurd. Give him 1 more year, but if it's the same thing next year clearly the extension of Holtmann talk is truth and a change needs to be made.

With me there's an eye test component. The 2001 football team's record was worse than the 2000 team's, but you could nonetheless see that they were headed in the right direction ins terms of discipline, attitude, being hardnosed, etc. Last year, I favored giving Diebler the job, in the absence of great options and with him coming cheap, because they clearly played harder and FASTER, than under Holtmann and, it seemed, had a plan to be up-tempo and have an identity going forward. I thought the risk of his inexperience was worth it and we could be more deliberate in choosing a successor pretty quickly if it didn't work out. Then this year comes, and, while I won't fault their effort level, they were not at all up-tempo and and showed little basketball IQ, discipline, or toughnness (can anyone box out?). In the NIL era, we're always going to lose guys (although I'm unconvinced that losing Meechie was really a loss based on his one court play when they had him) so I don't think those excuses hold much water for me. Record aside, if they don't look much more like they have a clue and that individual players are improving at the end of next season, I'd cut bait.

All of the bad mental mistakes, usually at the worst times are definitely a red flag, to me that's a reflection of the coach. But I know some will pin that squarely on the players. If it happens again next year in the same ways its definitely a coaching problem.

Seems like a great dude with connections in Ohio recruiting. I just don't think he's ready for it. My thinking is to give him another year. Same results next year then time to move on.

He's getting another year, but I doubt they fire him even if they fail to make the dance again. The AD seems content with his comments about this season "meeting expectations" because they could care less about the basketball program as long as they can ride the success of the football program. Diebler is cheap and a likeable guy who doesn't bring any bad press so it's probably going to take a completely clunker (like a 10 win season) for any action to actually be taken. When the "expectation" is this season this is what we get
