Read a report (fake news?) that negotiations between Bjork and Diebs were going on, with the outcome determining whether new coach or not. My mind immediately said, 'not about salary', but about NIL money for the team. (Maybe more for assistants?) I guess in today's college world, it's apparent that one must 'put one's money where one's mouth is'. You cannot just mouth the words, 'we want our basketball team to equal our football team', or somesuch, gotta put some dollars behind it. Something we all see and know. tOSU funds, what, 36 collegiate sports, and only 3-4 are revenue generators, yet we take pride in the diversity. Kinda an obvious question, but wouldn't one want to stimulate those three-four revenue generators to make even more money? Anyway, some mental masturbation for a Monday morning.

Jake Diebler’s latest comment should be music to the ears of Buckeye Nation following Ohio State’s season ending in the NCAA Tournament​

The future of Ohio State basketball could be on the come up if Jake Diebler’s latest comment holds weight.

On his weekly radio show on Monday, Diebler made a promising statement that’ll correlate exactly with what Ohio State fans want to hear.

“There’s a lot of good happening behind the scenes to set us up to be successful from a roster construction point,” Diebler stated. “It’s been a battle to get to this point but I’m excited about the progress we’ve made …”

Much better place today than we were this time last year when it comes to building our roster.”

Not that I think Jake Diebler is the worst coach but he sorely sorely stands out vs what the rival has. He’ll never sniff what Dusty May is (and will be).

Just embarrassing the direction our Athletic Department took in contrast to what Michigan has done to win.

And what would one think Diebs would say? The AD and new Pres have vetoed tossing 'good money after bad'? While losing his Asst HC? Doubt we'll see a new assistant named until tOSU starts signing up some new talent to replace what is lost. Plus, do you really think that a block-buster of a Asst HC hire would be anything other than a 'replacement in waiting' for Diebs to get the thumb? (Realizing that am mixing sports analogies, but it's early in the AM). My mind works in those directions. Diebs isn't going to hire some seasoned winner.....

Methinks that tOSU coach is going to get downplayed all the time, in that tOSU has the financial backing to hire the best, and that includes NIL for players. Day should have COY, but it's 'expected' from the Ohio State coach to have his team in the upper echelon year after year. Ergo, translates to basketball as well. Don't know enough about coaches reps to comment on the list above, but don't believe any but maybe two would be tOSU targets. Diebs, just put together a team that wins, and all that goes away.....

Diebs actually stacks up well compared to MOST B1G coaches over their respective first 2 seasons; however, there's no doubt this upcoming season is the crucial one. With 3 years left on his contract, after this upcoming season he will have 2 years left if not extended, and OSU typically does not let coaches have under 2 years left for recruiting purposes. Everything is lined up for him to lead the team to a good season and get a contract extension, if it doesn't happen there's no where else to turn.

Jake Diebler​

On Ohio State’s scrimmage against Cincinnati​

  • “It was really cool.”
  • “I see you have a stat sheet. Did it have airballs on there? We had more airballs in that game than we’ve had in three months.”
  • Diebler said Cincinnati provided “the adversity” he wanted his team to experience in October. He wasn’t concerned about the result since the scrimmage was played outdoors.
  • Diebler said Ohio State has grown over the past few weeks, from its scrimmage against Cincinnati to its scrimmage against Louisville. The Buckeyes will wrap up their preseason with a scrimmage against Butler on Sunday.

On team cohesion and chemistry with an overhauled roster​

  • With an overhauled roster, Diebler said team cohesion and connection will be critical to the Buckeyes’ success this season.
  • Diebler said Ohio State’s trip to Puerto Rico helped the team bond on and off the court. He was thankful the Buckeyes could make the trip during the summer, when the players were still relatively new to the program.
  • Diebler said his team is excited to start the regular season and is looking forward to Big Ten competition in January. “I think we’re built for it.”

On hiring William Buford and Jared Sullinger​

  • “We added a couple of former players in Will Buford and Jared Sulinger, who won championships while at Ohio State, had great careers, went on to have great professional careers.”
  • “Really high basketball IQ guys.”
  • “Our scout team got a lot better this offseason. So good that even I jump in there now a little bit because they can make you look good, right?”
  • “They’ve mentored our players at a really high level. We’re gonna see dividends of that as the year goes on.”
  • “It’s been a great offseason.”

On honoring Thad Matta during the Butler scrimmage​

  • On Thad Matta: “Thad is a mentor of mine. … I admired and got to see up close and in person how Thad connected with his players, and I think that was his secret sauce, his ability to bond with guys and build those strong relationships. That was something that stuck with me the rest of my career and something I lean on to this day.”
  • Diebler said he called his brother, Jon Diebler, who is currently an assistant at Butler, about facing the Bulldogs in an exhibition this season. “We should make it like The Thad Matta Bowl and honor him and bring him back. … Thad’s played a huge role in both of our lives. It’s right to honor him getting his 500th victory this past season.”
  • “He’s been a part of some of the best stretches in recent Ohio State basketball history, and I’m looking forward to having him in the Schott again.”

On coaching without Bruce Thornton​

  • Diebler said it’s been an adjustment coaching at Ohio State without Bruce Thornton. “Bruce had an unbelievable career here.”
  • Diebler credited Thornton for helping the program get to where it is today.
  • “But it’s also, you got to turn the page. We have a team that’s ready, and it’s about these guys. I’ve been so impressed with John Mobley and Amare Bynum’s leadership. That’s a big question we all had. What will our leadership look like? Those guys have had a great voice. They’re saying the right things. They’re inserting themselves in the right moments.”
  • Diebler said he feels “great” about Mobley and Bynum’s leadership entering the season.
