Assessing Jake Diebler's performance in his first year so far leading Ohio State

The Ohio State basketball program has had mixed results this season under Jake Diebler in his first full year as a head coach.

Overall, Diebler's performance gets a B so far. That's an acceptable grade for someone who is in his first full year as a head coach. He needs his team to win out for them to comfortably be in the NCAA Tournament, but that is well within reach with the schedule they have left.

It's funny but I would say very few here would be willing to give him a B grade. I think there were some big things that happened that worked against him this season - Okpara and Gayle/Meechie in particular - and he hasnt really been able to build his own team yet. It disappoints me how quickly fans want to give up on Diebler, but maybe that's just OSU fans in general as many were calling for Day to be fired after the UM loss. Maybe our fanbase is just overloaded with Monday morning QBs. With the huge loss of talent and scrambling to replace it in ways that didn't work very well, the results are about as much as you could hope for.

The second half meltdowns and serious boneheaded play at times to me are reflections of the coach. That's the biggest issues we've had this season.

It is a small but vocal minority. They are lunatics and they exist on the fringe.

You can look at it the other way, too. The fact that this team, with no legit big man and not much quality depth, has been able to manage getting double-digit leads against respectable teams on a semi-regular basis is a sign of being well-coached. I think the reality with high level basketball is when your team is the one that's easier to score on in the post, when other teams are consistently getting easier opportunities close to the basket and able to beat you on the offensive glass repeatedly because you're not big and strong enough, you're going to lose more than you win against same level competition. This program absolutely has to fix the issue of being beta in the post. Being smaller and weaker is also connected with OSU getting whistled for lots of frontcourt fouls & that takes away aggressiveness and exacerbates the problem, and as the game goes on makes it harder to keep up the pressure inside. When they get the lack of strength and size in the frontcourt fixed, I think a lot of the other issues about giving up leads will be solved.

I'd give him a B. He's exceeded my expectations by 4 wins already. The players clearly respond to his style. It takes time to build his program and this program needs stability.

I guess to me I just see too much of the same Holtmann crap going on, Diebler being a assistant of Holtmann makes it impossible to not see him as just a extension of Holtmann when this stuff happens. Too many occurrences of guys and even the whole team at time just looking completely lost, too many mental lapses......that kinda stuff.

I don't know how anyone can see it as anything but what it was, a lazy hire by the athletic department. That's what it was. They didn't even attempt to look at anyone else.

I would agree that there could have been a bigger impact with another hire from outside the program, but that takes making the right choice. It's no guarantee the OSU AD would actually have made a better choice, even though it seems like there were options like Pat Kelsey who appear to have been logical candidates. That being said, it's not fair to hold the hiring process the university uses against the coach - he had no control over that. You could also look at the problems the program has right now as the extension of the Holtmann era since his stamp is all over the program, as you say. Hopefully with Diebler having more time we will see a larger departure away from some of the flaws of Holtmann, particularly the lack of post presence.
