Jadeveon Clowney (DE Carolina Panthers)

To me, the game day atmosphere is like the icing on the cake. If one hasn't already assembled the flour, eggs, butter, milk, etc., to make the cake, what good is the icing? Rarely has one tasted some icing then decided that a cake needs to be made for which to house that fabulous icing.

Kids want to do fun things, so it is easier to get kids to visit for exciting games. That doesn't mean it is he best way to sign kids.

What ljb is saying is that recruiting fans make way too many assumptions about atmosphere and outcomes. Before the season, Msu cleaned up in recruiting by their standards. Yet when they had an incredible run to #1, they really didn't benefit much from it. Kids love the atmosphere but that is a fickle, fleeting thing for most.

Same with osu. Their best atmosphere by a mile was um 06, but even bigger was a truckload of blu choppers who had osu at or near the top from the 07 class. They went on to whiff on almost every one. Why? Because that buzz faded and other schools found a way to top it.

The reason Tressel asks kids to make sure they want to verbal is that flippant verbals lead to devastating decommitments, transfers or malcontents.

Most players go through a phase (or four) of feeling homesick, overwhelmed or unhappy and want to transfer during their college years. All players to through adversity on and off of the field. It is during those times that a program needs kids who have a deep passion and commitment to the coach and program, not just a kid who got caught up in the excitement and intoxication of a great weekend. It will fade, and then no one wins.

Can't argue with that, I actually didn't notice until just now how strong the original comment that ljb was responding to was:

Well that's terrible news. I think our hopes for a coup were riding on him being blown away by the game day environment in the Shoe. Without us getting the chance to make use of that ace in the hole, I think our chances just flew out the window.

I think ljb's comment was just as crazy though because it was said like it's true 100% of the time:

recruits don't care about the atmosphere in The Shoe. If players cared about game day environment, then none of them would ever go to Miami or Southern Cal.

Also, the evidence in the 2nd sentence by no means is proof of the first sentence.

LJB, don't twist my words. I'm not saying kids make decisions solely based on game day atmosphere, but I am saying that it's a factor. And I think everyone is in agreement that Clowney is an uphill battle, as all reports indicate this is a South Carolina - Alabama battle. I used the word coup for a reason, not just for pretty writing. We really need to pull out all the stops if we're going to get this kid to sign his name for us in February, which in my mind includes having him here for a game. I'm not saying game day is bigger than coaches, facilities, education, etc, but I absolutely am saying that missing out on one of those factors entirely (ie, not having him here for a game) is going to diminish from our hopes of pulling him away from the south.

Again, to put it in plain english: Letting him meet coaches, tour facilities, meet with advisors, and go to a game is BETTER than letting him meet coaches, tour facilities, meet with advisors, and not see a game.

I'm not twisting your words. It's not a factor.

And going to a game on an official visit is certainly not BETTER because the kid gets to spend less quality time with coaches, players, etc., and instead gets to waste several of his 48 hours on campus watching a game that may or may not be worth watching.

OSU has produced incredible visit weekends for many years now. If it was a notable factor, osu would see a notable uptick in verbals.

Spring games are different, it is a party for the fans and coaches are hardly preoccupied with the outcome, before and afterwards.

I think the best argument and explanation was the icing.

If Clowney is willing to come up to Columbus in January, you know he has to being seriously considering us and it's not one of those visits (as in a visit to USC or Miami where the weather is still decent in January) where he's going just to sight-see.

Free Rivals - Ask Mike: Tennessee losing ground

Buckeyes clowning around?

What are Ohio State's chances at convincing Jadeveon Clowney to come to Columbus?

- Ben from Twinsburg, Ohio

If the Buckeyes get him on campus anything can happen. But I really feel he stays in the SEC. South Carolina is the team to beat and after that it's anyone's guess. I still think Alabama is No. 2 and Auburn, Florida State, Ohio State and the rest are trailing. Just the fact that the only school outside the Southeast that Clowney wants to visit is a compliment to the recruiting efforts of the Buckeyes staff and shows the long reach of the program. But don't get your hopes up too high.

Hey, if I could get Angie Jolie to stop by the crib just to get to know me a little better, no commitment needed of course, I'd jump at the chance. Because who knows what could happen if I could get her just to make a visit?

Of course, I'm not suggesting vodka-and-rohypnol will be part of Clowney's dinner menu when he visits Columbus. He's a minor and everything.

There's a Jersey Shore marathon coming up I think. I'd try and get her to come for that. If she doesn't make it that weekend I have a hard time believing you'll be able to get her to come over.

When is the last time we lure a TOP defensive talent away from any one of those warmer climate states (cali, florida, texas...etc)? I say the odd of getting a visit from Clowney in January is slim to none, let alone eventually landing him. BUT, I would say this though, anytime when Coach Tress is personally involved in a kid's recruitment, you have to equate in the Mama factor and give it a chance, even if it's a tiny one at best.

:osu2:

osu.edu ROCKS!!!

South Pointe's Jadeveon Clowney a monster on D
By Ben Glicksman, SI.com

Jadeveon Clowney
Position:
Defensive End
School:South Pointe High
Location:Rock Hill, S.C.
Height:6-6
Weight:240
Class:Senior

Season Highlights:

Clowney has been a one-man wrecking crew on defense with 128 tackles, 19.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles and an interception this season. Alabama, South Carolina, LSU, Florida State and Ohio State are among the schools vying for his services next season.

At 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, South Pointe High defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been labeled as intimidating. The sheer magnitude of his presence forces double (and even triple) teams, and his enormous wingspan makes him a constant threat to swat down passes at the line of scrimmage. Perhaps he's more aptly described as unblockable. He also runs a blistering 4.48 40.

That combination of size and speed has made Clowney arguably the most highly coveted player in the Class of 2011. He's ranked number one at his position on Rivals.com, Scout.com and 247Sports. He's the embodiment of what analysts refer to as a physical specimen, power cleaning 300 pounds and possessing a 36 inch vertical leap. Scouts have likened him to former Titans and Eagles DE Jevon Kearse for his physically imposing build.

"The buzz don't bother me," he says of his much ballyhooed potential.

It's tantalized college coaches, though, many of whom are engaged in an all-out recruiting frenzy for his services. He's been targeted by Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier and Les Miles, among others, and has received scholarship offers from nearly every perennial BCS powerhouse. Despite speculation that he's favoring Alabama and hometown South Carolina, he's careful not to reveal where he is leaning.

"I don't have a top [choice] right now," he says.
