Grad how would you compare Clowney to Bowers?

Clowney is that dominant against top-tier competition. Daquan played in the smallest division in SC...equivalent to D-V/VI in Ohio. Both are incredible players but Clowney is a freak athlete. I'd compare him more to former Florida DL Carlos Dunlap in HS due to the build. Bowers is stocky and can play the interior as well as the end. Clowney is a pure edge player. Daquan definitely had some jets for a kid that size but nothing like Clowney.

BN $ - January Visit For Country?s No. 1 Prospect

11/10

By BK...his coach says the list is down to five (Alabama, South Carolina, LSU, Florida State and Ohio State)...will likely take all five visits and plans to visit OSU in January.

Well that's terrible news. I think our hopes for a coup were riding on him being blown away by the game day environment in the Shoe. Without us getting the chance to make use of that ace in the hole, I think our chances just flew out the window.

For the umpteenth time ... recruits don't care about the atmosphere in The Shoe. If players cared about game day environment, then none of them would ever go to Miami or Southern Cal. If a kid is going to be blown away by anything, it would be Ohio State's facilities, and how many former Buckeyes are cashing NFL paychecks.

Besides, you don't really want a kid to be "blown away" anyway - you want him to connect with the coaching staff and players, and feel comfortable with the school in general (location, student body, academics, campus). Kids who are "blown away" usually make bad decisions, and that's why Tressel does everything he can to make sure that every kid who commits to the Buckeyes is 100% sold on every aspect of the Ohio State experience.

I'll have to disagree with you otherwise we wouldn't bother inviting kids to games. I would think the coaches like having these recruits experience up close the game day atmosphere at OSU. There are other reasons why kids are drawn to schools like Miami and USC that in their eyes trumps game atmosphere at those schools. There have been many a recruit that have stated they have been blown away by the game day atmosphere at OSU that have signed with OSU and don't regret that decision. I'm not saying that it's the sole reason they signed, but for some it plays a part.

I think that most (if not all) kids who were "blown away" by the game day atmosphere fall into two categories: (1) they were fans of Ohio State long before the recruiting process began, and/or (2) they are engaging in recruitspeak. If I'm wrong, then feel free to cite some examples.

Here are some cases of recruitspeak:

2010 MD TE Paul Phillips (cites the game atmosphere at Indiana as a factor in his decision)

2010 LA DT Harold Legania (discusses the "unbelievable" atmosphere and fans at Minnesota)

2010 FL WR Chevin Davis (discusses how he "loved" the game day atmosphere at Purdue)

2009 MI TE Demarkus Bracy (discusses the "fun" atmosphere at Cincinnati)

You can probably see where I'm going with all of this - Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, and Cincinnati are not exactly known for their game day atmospheres, but there are four examples of out-of-state kids who made a game day visit and cited game day atmosphere as one of the reasons for their respective commitments. It took me about fifteen minutes to find these four examples - if I had the time, I'm certain that I could find many more.

With regards to being "blown away".... No matter how great the bachelor party, you don't call off the wedding and marry the stripper. When Ohio State gets involved with a big-time OOS recruit late in the process, the Buckeye staff has just 48 hours to make an impression. What are the odds that that "first impression" will be strong enough to overcome the months or years of goodwill that other staffs have built up with the recruit? Probably about zero, and that's why Ohio State (and just about every other school) rarely come out of nowhere to land recruits in the eleventh hour.

So Illinois has a shot?

I don't know every school that the players you listed had the chance to visit to experience the atmosphere. A quick search says Phillips visited Syracuse and Indiana. For all I know those two schools could of been the biggest programs he's ever visited, so I'm not as quick to say it was just "recruit speak" when he says he was blown away by the atmosphere at Indiana. Every kid doesn't get to experience anything like a OSU game day.

Jeff Hueurman comes to mind as a recruit who really enjoyed the spring game and that helped in his very fast commitment.

Back to Clowney.
