Sure, standing alone this is a tempest in a tea pot, and it illustrates the abusrdities of NCAA rules on extra benefits.

On the other hand, in the context of the Tat 5 scandal, the fact that the COI is writing its final decision on sanctions for that scandal, and that OSU has supposedly given explicit instructions on what players can and can't accept, how did these knuckleheads put themselves and the program in this kind of peril? It makes me sick.

I don't care if they get a shirt and a mousepad. Heck, give them 100 gift bags. I don't think CFB is corrupted. But the rules are there, so obey them - especially given the situation OSU is in. There should be an NCAA against chronic intractible stupidity.

here is my final take on the subject...

the only way this kind of stuff gets the school/football program in trouble is if you don't catch them and someone else does....or you catch them and don't self report.

To me this seems like OSU handled this perfectly. Found a violation, handled it according to the rules.

IIRC, the committee on infractions makes their decision in the week or weekend following the hearing. It's the official report that takes 6-8 weeks to get out.

At least that's what I remember reading, could be wrong though. Anyone know? (I'm looking at you BB73)

Here's the article that Rusty Miller, who is the guy with the droopy mustache that covers the Buckeyes full-time for the Associated Press, wrote yesterday:

Link

Words it does NOT contain: "charity", "breast cancer", or "gift bags".

Words and phrases it contains: Perhaps that article was written before word of it being gift bags from a breast cancer awareness event was getting around. But the word "charity" was in the initial press release from tOSU, and that was conveniently left out.

It looks to me like the writer wanted to make it sound as bad as possible, rather than just presenting the facts of the story.

All the more reason why tOSU's press release should have contained more specific information.

Rusty Miller is a douchebag. I've said it on here a few times. He hates tOSU as much as anyone at ESPN, he's just more clever and sly at hiding it until the right moments.

I really really wish he would be transferred to another assignment for AP. I hear Yemen is nice this time of year.

I read the same thing about 3 weeks ago.

I'd guess it came about because they just didn't connect the dots very carefully. It was a mistake, and one (it seems to me) that would be pretty easy to make, especially for a young kid like these players are.

Frankly, with the degree of scrutiny that tOSU is undergoing, damned if I'd be comfortable with sending my kid there to play football. Not because of any fault of the program, but because the media whores and the NCAA meatheads seem hell-bent to fuck with us every chance they get. That's what makes me sick, not the inevitable occasional missteps by young men.

Thinking about this more, this could be a good thing. We exchange a one game suspension against a team we should destroy for proving we have a commitment to strict enforcement and self reporting. Should only help our plight, as I don't see these infractions as being serious enough to aid some notion of lack of institutional control.

This is the truth. I think everyone around here is just a little sensitive due to the fact that our balls have been kicked so many times that we can't pee straight. It is a small measure that can show the NCAA brass that everything that happened was an isolated incident and that no further major sanctions need apply here. just have to keep in mind that until mid October that any sway in the branches could decide what the NCAA decides penalty-wise. I don't mind. Plus it gives our guys more incentive to play hard on the field and to do the right thing off it. And some guys that could have been waiting 2-3 years to see this much PT get it tomorrow. I am excited to see them.

I just want to add, I am thoroughly pleased about hearing that the guys remaining from the Tat 5 have been stepping up and being huge in the development of the guys going out there in their absence. These guys could have said "screw those guys, I am not giving them any help in taking my spot". But instead see the big picture and understand what this team should be about, family. Guys doing whatever they can for each other. Guys giving 110% percent even when they aren't going to play. This coming out now(even if in the microscope period), shows that tOSU is taking things serious and that we as fans can rest easy sooner than later that we won't have a demon in the closet.

But anyhow, keep up the good work guys.

I was waiting on some media blowhard to make and LOIC reference.

I won't go so far as to say that this incident was actually a positive thing, but in terms of the rules it is the very definition of "institutional control". Ohio State has demonstrably resumed a pattern of institutional compliance that was interrupted only by Coach Tressel's 10.1 violations.
