IU Coach Terry Hoeppner

from the Indy Star:

IU football coach Hoeppner dies
By Terry Hutchens
June 19, 2007

Indiana basketball coach Kelvin Sampson said today the weather outside his office fit the mood of a campus mourning the death of football coach Terry Hoeppner.

"Coach was the eternal optimist," Sampson said. "Right now I'm looking outside of Assembly Hall and it's raining. The weather kind of fits the mood around here right now. It's a rainy, dreary day. But if coach Hep were here he wouldn't see the rain. He just never saw a bad day. It was never a rainy day, the sun was always shining for him. He will be sorely missed in this department."

Damned shame. His passing was always a possibility, but he had fought back once before and surely hoped to do so again.

The saddest part, aside from the obvious grief that his family is experiencing today and in the weeks to come, is the unfulfilled hope Hoeppner represented for Indiana football.

He had done such great things at Miami, something he shared with other Big 10 coaches who passed through Oxford, OH and also passed away within this 12-month period - Bo and Randy Walker. There is no doubt that he hoped to make the same kind of signature impact at Indiana which Walker had been able to achieve at Northwestern. Now, that may only happen in legacy.

Terry goes to his grave too young, too soon, and with his potential still to be fully realized. Our thoughts should be with his family, his friends and the many lives he has touched in Oxford and now in Bloomington.

This is a shock to me. I knew he once had brain cancer but thought that it was behind him. I feel awful for the players at IU. I really believe that they were headed in the right direction. Now, we'll never know.

For the second time in less than a year, the college coaching fraternity is mourning the loss of one of its own. For the second time in less than a year, a Big Ten program finds itself grieving the death of its leader. For the second time in less than a year, the folks at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, are lamenting a tragedy involving one of the most revered figures in their history. Continued...

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson was too immersed in the team's youth football camp for most of Tuesday to reflect on Terry Hoeppner's death, but the emotions flowed while speaking to the media about his mentor shortly before a dinner break.
An assistant under Hoeppner at Miami from 2000 to 2003, Johnson started to share some memories of the well-regarded Indiana coach, but the words became lodged in his throat.

Card remembers days of 'Coach Hep'

By JOSH WEIR
repository sports writer

PLAIN TWP. Joey Card's college choice basically came down to Urban Meyer or Terry Hoeppner.

The former GlenOak High School star couldn't have gone wrong with either coach. And he didn't.

Meyer, an upstart at Bowling Green at the time, went on to national championship glory with the University of Florida. But Card doesn't regret staking his lot with "Coach Hep" and Miami (Ohio).
