Health forces Indiana's Hoeppner to skip spring practice
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Indiana coach Terry Hoeppner, who has had brain surgery twice in the last 15 months, will skip spring practice for health reasons.
Athletic director Rick Greenspan said in a statement Sunday night Hoeppner had indicated a desire to regain his strength and energy after a rigorous recruiting campaign. Assistant head coach Bill Lynch will be in a charge of the team when it begins practice on Tuesday.

Indiana's Hoeppner still recovering from brain surgery
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Indiana football coach Terry Hoeppner is still undergoing medical treatment and remains intent on returning to the sideline this fall.
Athletic department officials released a short statement from Hoeppner on Tuesday, the first update on Hoeppner's health since an announcement nearly two months ago that he would not coach spring practice to recuperate from brain surgery.
"I continue to receive medical treatment and remain inspired to return to coaching when my health permits," Hoeppner said. "I love Indiana University and Indiana football and will make decisions in the best interest of the program, as I have always attempted to do."
Hoeppner had brain surgery twice in a 10-month span and has now left the team three times since December 2005.

No decision by Indiana on Hoeppner's continued absence
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) ? Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan won't speculate what action he might take should ailing football coach Terry Hoeppner be unable to return to the team in time for preseason practice this summer.
Hoeppner, still undergoing treatment in his recuperation from brain surgery, made his last major public appearance in late February at an NCAA luncheon in Indianapolis. He skipped spring practice and did not attend the annual spring game in mid-April.
Assistant Bill Lynch, a former head coach at Butler, Ball State and DePauw, guided the team in Hoeppner's absence.
Greenspan said Thursday he is pleased with the work by Lynch and the rest of the staff, but he's not ready to say what he would do if Hoeppner is still out through the summer and fall.

Hoeppner contract could be voided if he's 'permanently disabled'

June 7, 2007
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Terry Hoeppner's contract with Indiana University could be voided if a doctor determines the Hoosiers' ailing football coach is permanently disabled.
The contract, obtained by The Associated Press under a Freedom of Information request, does not specify a timetable for making such a decision.
Hoeppner, who turns 60 in August, has undergone two brain surgeries since December 2005 and is on his third medical leave from the team. Still, he signed a two-year extension to his contract last December.
His latest absence began in mid-March and is the longest of the three. Hoeppner has not made a public appearance since late February at a NCAA luncheon in Indianapolis.
Athletic director Rick Greenspan recently expressed concern over Hoeppner's prolonged absence but declined repeated interview requests from The Associated Press.
The disability provision in Hoeppner's contract, which is similar to language in other coaches' contracts, allows the contract, which runs through June 2012, to be terminated for physical or mental disabilities.
