It was nice knowing ya'll

Reports coming out now that, not surprisingly, people chose to act ahead of the alleged apocalypse:

But while Camping and his followers try to figure out what went wrong (or right) ? with news Monday night that he now says Judgment Day will come on Oct. 21 ? the failed prophecy did more than just damage Camping's credibility: It also appears to have caused death and serious injury to true believers.

A California woman named Lyn Benedetto was one of millions who heard Camping's message, and became concerned that her daughters would suffer terribly in the coming apocalypse. She allegedly forced her daughters, 11 and 14, to lie on a bed and then cut their throats with a box cutter. She then tried to kill herself, though police arrested Benedetto and all three survived.

Others were not so lucky. An elderly man in Taiwan reportedly killed himself on May 5 ahead of the Rapture by jumping out of a building. He had heard that doomsday was imminent, and had taken recent earthquakes and tsunamis as early warning signs.

There are going to be a lot more people offing themselves ahead of 12/21/12. What really bothers me is the parents who will be doing it to their children. Innocent lives lost, for nothing.

Well now, Camping should be arrested and tried for murder or manslaughter since his false prophecy pushed people to, and over, the edge.

If a person who tweets/twits/twots (whatever the hell its called) about someone in a derogatory way and the subject then offs themselves, said tweeter/twitter/twotter gets hit with a crime. I think this should fall under those same type of rules.

Possibly. But if you're specifically referring to the Ravi case, that is only one component of the things with which he is charged.

But, he (Ravi) is being charged, no? That is my point. Religious kook or mean-spirited roommate, both have caused people to kill/try to kill themselves (and possibly others in Camping's case) because of their reckless actions and words. I see no difference between the two.

(The ancillary charges in the Ravi case have to do with impeding an investigation into the death of the roommate, but the death of the roommate is what initially caused the investigation.)

The major difference would be, the people listening to Camping had a choice - listen or turn the channel. Ravi's roommate had no choice; he was recorded without his knowledge or consent.

The roommate had a choice not to kill himself, as well. He could have just pursued civil and criminal mischief/intimidation charges.

This is getting the thread off track, and the Ravi stuff has its own thread.

Back to the main subject. In my IMO, Camping should be arrested and tried for manslaughter in any and all case where people offed themselves because of his "prophecy".

I don't know that he can be tried for manslaughter, but I feel like he should face some repercussions for this. Inducing Panic might stick.

Nothing would stick....he gets to hide behind religion.
No different than Pope John Paul II or Benedict XVI or any other religious leader who poisons the minds of their followers with lies about the promise of life after death. In what other business can you get wealthy off of selling people an intangible product (and even get a tax exempt status while doing it) that isn't delivered until after they are dead and then having no way of verifying delivery, and not be accused of running a scam?

Ermm, how could he have complained to his RA about something that hadn't happened yet? Prescience?

Ermm he was complaining about the first time it happened (although going back & rechecking the timelines aren't clear....the "school official" he talked to on the 22nd may have been the RA, some of the reports imply they were two different events...).

GTFO, that's so far removed from what this creep and idiot did, and strikes me as rather intolerant and hateful. But whatever, I know you'll discount what I say because I can't possibly be sane or have a decent mind because I might believe there's a possibility of something better beyond this world.
