Didn't get much sleep. When they bumped it up to 145 mph @2:00AM I knew I had to leave. I was out at 6:00AM.

We are in Starkville, MS. Still in the path but 100+ miles inland. I pulled a neighbor's truck out of a ditch and checked on some friends that were headed to Houston before I left.

This is not going to be good. Not sure what to expect when we get home if we get home.

There is another tropical depression forming in the Atlantic.

It took me 5 hours to go 250 miles. I did the back road route. No traffic patrol so speed was not an issue. I only drove 60 miles on I-59 and it flowed pretty well.

They use contraflow where both east and west traffic lanes are directed one way. They told people to go west first, then east and finally north. I was on a northeast path.

One of my co-workers is in the National Guard and my hunting buddy is in the Coast Guard. They are both still there protecting the less fortunate. My thoughts are with them.

Bad

Glad you got out of New Orleans Nola!

But those estimates of 40,000 lives lost might not be far off. People are litterally partying on bourbon street right now. And with the city possibly being 25-30 feet underwater, this is just horrible!

Unfortunately, some people are failing to grasp the kind of havoc a Category 5 can bring, especially to a city that relies on levees to stay above the water.

This type of storm hitting a city like that could produce the worst storm damage we've ever seen. Flooding that doesn't subside - where the hell can it go? - winds levelling buildings; those partying on Bourbon Street right now are fools. Glad to see one of our own got out of there.

God help them...

i was born and lived in north carolina for 9 years and have been through 4 hurricanes, but nothing compares to this shit.

just pray that everyone is safe and makes it through, new orleans is really vulnerable and hopefully those estimates are really really far off.

any idea what percentage has actually evacuated?

I got to see what a Cat 4 could do first hand last year with Charlie... that area is still in shambles. I just hope people don't make the same mistake people made in Punta Gorda and think they can ride it out. Glad you mad eit out NOLA.... stay safe.

Katrina is on the rag. She's going to do serious damage to the fair city of New Orleans and anything near it.

God Bless those who have no means to evacuate. They are in for a rough day. This is going to turn ugly in a hurry.
