At the grocery stores I go to chili is in it's own section. Not even the same isle as soup. It's actually in the same section as other canned meat/fish. Chili ingredients are in the spices section and of course beans/meat are in their own area.

My stepdad has always referred to it as "chili soup" but he is from some seriously deep backwoods and has bizarre naming conventions for a lot of things. My personal opinion is that it is not as the standard foundation of any true "soup" is a broth or a cream.

Also, soup is what girls order at Panera. Chili I believe has a stronger testosterone-based following therefore excluding it from the genuine soup family.

Chili is a meal in itself. I've never had soup for dinner, but I've had chili lot's of times. Ergo, Chili is not soup.
