You're absolutely correct "as thick as a stew" is far too thin for a proper bowl of Chili con carne.Chili should not be as thick as a stew though, in my IMO

It's essentially all of the veggies and beans in a broth seasoned to your liking. It's never let me down if I needed to fix chili quickly and didn't have time to break out the slow cooker.
That's the only store bought variation of chili I've had.
The world would be better if there weren't. I remember being so strapped for cash one summer that I'd stretch one can of Hormel chili over an entire bag of elbow macaroni and call it lunch for the week.
