Do you consider chili a "soup"?

There's no such thing as "store bought chili."

knapplc has not heard of this. He does not want to see them. He does not want them to be. He wants to go away from that section of the store and hide somewhere safe. Smeago-- err, knapplc wants master to go.

Occasionally, I'll swing by Fresh Market in Oakley or Whole Foods in Rookwood and pick up "Chili Starter"
It's essentially all of the veggies and beans in a broth seasoned to your liking. It's never let me down if I needed to fix chili quickly and didn't have time to break out the slow cooker.

That's the only store bought variation of chili I've had.

To further muddy the waters, I present:

:paranoid:

I must admit, my mouth waters uncontrollably when gazing upon a 5-way. To echo knapplc, don't judge me.

Chili Con Carne is a Mexican stew.......

Regardless of which Chili creation myth you choose to believe they all have one thing in common....Chili is not in any way, shape or form a Mexican dish.

Chili should not be as thick as a stew though, in my IMO
You're absolutely correct "as thick as a stew" is far too thin for a proper bowl of Chili con carne.

There's an Oakley and a Rookwood in Atlanta?

My understanding of chili contests is that it must be without beans or veggies, that it is essentially beef in spices cooked down until, like pulled pork, it simply falls apart.

I grew up thinking chili was hamburger, kidney beans, onion, celery and tomato paste with chili powder and a bay leaf thrown in - tended to be closer to a thick soup.

The world would be better if there weren't. I remember being so strapped for cash one summer that I'd stretch one can of Hormel chili over an entire bag of elbow macaroni and call it lunch for the week. More filling than ramen noodles, but ugh.

Ah, student days.

One spring my roomie and I ate nothing but Saxon corn meal mush for breakfast, lunch and supper for two weeks to raise funds for a party at Buckeye Lake with Ray Charles and his band. The Rayettes alone were worth the price of admission.
