The "who needs 60GB of music" debate will never end...

I know people who have hundreds and hundreds of CDs. It is more of a convenience factor for someone like that to have their entire music collection on one relatively small device.

The point of it is not "I have 10,000 songs -- I'm going to listen to them all", rather "I have 10,000 songs and will never need to listen to a CD again."

With the direct iPod connectors of most car CD players today (versus the sucky FM modulators), one can play their entire music collection in their car at the snap of a finger.

And with software available to transfer music from your iPod to your computer, you could almost throw away your CDs.

================

Having said that, I'm quite happy with my SanDisk Cruzer Micro MP3 Companion and my 512MB SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB thumb-drive filled with MP3s! I might pop for a black 4GB Nano soon however (cheaper for us students).

Exactly. I just bought an external drive with 120GB for under $100, mainly to back up my music collection. SO much faster to just run a search than to flip through a ton of CD cases looking for something. I'm definitely transferring the collection to one place... just don't want to pay hundreds merely to be able to wear it, too.

I could easily fill the 60GB one - actually, several of them - and it would be a hugely useful tool for work. Still, $400 is too steep, and $200 for 1/30 the space seems wasteful. I'll wait.

OK, I have (what I consider to be) a crapload of music on my work machine. 3,000 songs, which is over 9 days of music. This takes up only 17GB. And you are saying you have 120GB+ ?

Over 40GB so far, and that's probably 1/3 of my collection. Most of it is for work, though. (And thank goodness for used CD stores...) The stuff I bought purely for my own enjoyment would probably be around 10GB.

I got my fiance an MP3 player for $20 that uses an SD card

Is it a Phillips Rush by chance? :)

Think I saw that one on sale somewhere for $20.

I am scoping out the Phillips Mini-jukebox right now, think it's 2 gig, but that is enough. I am usually near one of my 2 computers, (home or work), so I can store the vast majority of my music on them, and just use the portable for traveling.

I have a second generation iPod and a Shuffle.

Apple sucks. The battery on the iPod is worthless. The Shuffle has been nothing but problems and I really don't care to be told that I must make 'an appointment' to see an 'Apple Genius' to talk about problems with a $100 purchase.

I now have a Cowan iAudio and love it. Only holds about 200 songs, but I rotate them off my hard drive library and it is plenty. If you haven't made the plunge yet stay away from Apple.

I've got a 15G IPOD... have had it about a year and a half without problems. I have about 1500 songs (6.5G) on it. It works for me because I have almost all my CD's and then a lot of kids songs for, of course, the kids. Less CD's to keep track of. I think I paid $350 for it... well worth it IMHO.

When I made the plunge into mp3 world last year, reviews are in the IPODs were about 60/40 with many complaints about battery life and cost per size. I picked up the 30 GB Creative Zen xtra for $230. Great so far other than lack of accessories.

Looks like I'll be selling my 40Gb 4th Gen iPod before Christmas.

Durability will become an issue with the smaller Nano and Shuffle. Is a $100 or $200 device really disposable? They're "cute" . Why waste your money. Get the bigger IPods and have them longer! Also Apple's Lossless system has better sound! That has to be worth something!:hatepc:

Only the ipod will play iTunes' m4p format. Honestly though, at this point I wouldn't really consider any other MP3 player. My two-year old 10 GB ipod player could be surgically attached to my hip for all I care, that's how often I've used it. Seriously, in 2 years of use, I think there are less than a dozen days it hasn't been used for atleast 10 minutes.

I'll grab this new one the day it's out. $300 is more than worth the many hours of entertainment the other one got me, now triple the storage, more battery life, and video playback. I'm sold.

Personally I think the Nano's are a rip-off. $250 for 4GB's? For $50 more you can get 7 and a half times the storage, PLUS video playback.

I don't know about the Nano, but I use the shuffle more frequently than I do my 4th gen 40Gb iPod. The shuffle is perfect while running, it was the sole reason I bought it. The shuffle is also entirely solid state -- no hard drive -- you can't get any more durable than that.
