iPhone/iPad App Recommendations & Reviews

Looks like a good one. For those wondering, he hasn't ported it to Android.Am I the only one missing the fascination with Angry Birds? There have been a number of flash games online just like it, and I'd argue a few were more enjoyable.

I have Angry Birds and thoroughly enjoy it. It's nothing new and there are a million other games just like it, but it's the one I like the best out of the ones I've tried. I don't know what to say about it beyond that. I've tried a bunch of other slingshot/trebuchet games that weren't as good as this one. There might be some better, but after I tried the lite version of Angry Birds I was content enough to stop looking.

I've read about the developers of Angry Birds trying to make it into a "franchise". I guess with all their success from the game I can't blame them for wanting to keep mining that vein, but I think whatever expansion ideas they have (besides porting the game itself) are going to fall flat. I mean, Angry Birds merch? An Angry Birds animated tv show or movie? Gimme a break!

Cut the rope is similar to angry birds, and is just as good

I tried Cut the Rope Lite when it came out recently - played all the levels in that version and didn't feel a need to upgrade or play any more. It's a novel concept, but it didn't entertain me enough and wasn't quite as well executed as I would've hoped (for instance, many times when I tried to "cut the rope" it would take several tries because my swipe wouldn't register.)

Apparently there is a Halloween Edition of Angry Birds out now for $0.99, and it quickly shot to the top of the charts.

I love me some Angry Birds, but I refuse to buy this. I think it's a trial balloon to see if created enough of an addiction among players to justify charging for every little update to the game. Judging by the success of this Halloween version, I'd say they could probably get away with it. I don't enjoy being nickeled & dimed to death though, so I'm staying away from it. Part of Angry Birds' appeal was its generous and frequent updates. It had value that persisted, it wasn't just a game that you beat in two days and deleted. I'd hate to see that change.

Conversely, Doodle Jump just released a Halloween update as an actual update - for free.

Also, Words with Friends did a very smart thing with their limited time Pirate-themed version. I didn't play Words with Friends before that, but now I'm hooked on it thanks to playing the Pirate version on a lark. I have all but ditched Scrabble.

I don't mean for this to be political, I just thought it a novel and funny twist on the overdone tower defense genre:

Claim Denied! puts the player in the position of a young claims adjuster at a private health insurance company. Your job is to stop your paying customers who need medical care from getting to the hospital. Perched atop the hospital roof, you main weapon is a "Denied" rubber stamp you wield at the onslaught of needy patients. The more sick and elderly you stop, the more money you get paid and the more your job security (health-meter) rises. As you make money for denying patients, you can use your funds to buy more "weapons," including stacks of paperwork you can drop in the infirm patients' paths to slow them down, pre-existing condition clauses that cut patients' health by 50% (making them easier to defeat), and finally, blue dogs that maul the sick who have kept up-to-date on their premiums. You can also use your funds to "lobby for job security" which effectively adds more power to your health-meter.

Official Google Voice app: It's finally here.

http://gizmodo.com/5691490/google-voice-for-iphone-its-here

Google's official Google Voice app is here. For the iPhone. Hot. Damn. And guess what? It's free. Updated.
It has what you think an official Google Voice app has: push notifications for new texts and voicemails, something prior GV apps couldn't quite handle without a third-party workaround. Get it now! Will update the post in a second with impressions.

When typing a text or email, is there anyway to keep it in CAPS lock?? I have to hit the CAPS button everytime I need to capitalize a letter.

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap General
  • Tap Keyboard
  • Tap the Enable Caps Lock slider
Once that setting is changed, you'll be able to "double-click" the button for caps lock. When you double-click, the caps lock button should light up blue - then you can type in ALL CAPS.

Holy crap. Sometimes do you almost pinch yourself, because you just can't believe you're witnessing such creations in your lifetime? Word Lens, which uses augmented reality to translate things in front of you, has given me that exact feeling.

Working kind of like Google Goggles in that it translates real-time images into readable information, Word Lens is a free download but language packs cost $5 as an in-app purchase. So far, it only has Spanish-to-English (and English-to-Spanish), but it will certainly help a person abroad (or even in their own country).

Ever Used Google Translate, or Babel Fish? The translations aren't perfect, but it's certainly enough to get you by. Word Lens produces similar word-for-word conversion, but if it'll help me avoid ordering a meaty dish from a menu accidentally, that's worth $5 right there. Possibly the best thing is that it doesn't require Wi-Fi or a data connection, as it translates instantly (as the video below shows).

RunKeeper Pro (normally $9.99) is FREE through the end of January.

Thanks for the tip. I've been using RK Free for over two years and kept talking myself out of buying RK Pro because I feel $9.99 is a bit much for an app. Free is for me though.
