iPhone/iPad App Recommendations & Reviews

http://m.gizmodo.com/5789815/watche...r-and-verizon-subscribers-watch-espn-anywhere

Hey, sports fans who also happen to be subscribers to Bright House Networks, Time Warner Cable or Verizon FiOS TV, you can now stream ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU with the WatchESPN app for iOS. Baseball! Basketball playoffs! Other sports! The app has programming guides for perusing what's on and a search function that lets you find the specific athletic diversion you're looking for. Free. [iTunes

Maybe this is why timewarner is being so slow / restrictive about ESPN service through the 360.

Instacast ($1.99) - Quite simply, this is how podcasts should have been working on iOS all along. This app is feature-packed and versatile, and it has got me back into listening to podcasts again. I can't possibly explain it all here, so here's a link to the developer's site:

World of Goo ($0.99) has been released for iPhone. I absolutely wore this game out on WiiWare a couple years ago. It's been out for iPad for a few months not and has been selling like hotcakes. I'm downloading now and I'm looking forward to seeing how it does on a small screen.

EDIT: Shit. World of Goo is still awesome. There goes my weekend.

EDIT 2: Apparently $0.99 for World of Goo is a sale price, today only. Regular price is $2.99. Also, the iPad version is now universal and comes in at $4.99.

Warning about IPhone App
There is an IPhone app being sold, and the author claims that it is the official Demonoid App. There is No such thing, and we do not have anything to do with the app, nor authorized it in any way.

Also, although this is just a guess and we have no proof denying it or confirming it, the app could easily be used to steal users accounts by sending the login information to the author.

I'm trying to find an Excel/Word editor that can also save as a PDF. Anybody know of any? Looks like QuickOffice can do it on the iPad version but not for the iPhone.

Alternatively, any good and fairly cheap PDF converters?

Seems like when you search for apps on Google you just get a bunch of junk returned.

Okay. I am waiting for someone to borrow my phone. Ugh I hate long jokes!

Mine is jailbroken, so I downloaded a bunch of free dumb games I'll never play and changed the icon for each one to "porn."

So once someone finally borrows my phone, as I put them all the main screen, they'll just see "porn, porn, porn, porn, porn, porn, porn, porn, phone."

Ah, I only entertain myself I guess.

I don't think you're going to find a word processiong or rich text editing app that also has PDF functions. You're probably going to need two apps to convert and then edit - perhaps with Dropbox support for each.

For the PDF end of things, check out GoodReader. It's not a universal app - there are separate versions for iPhone and iPad. However, it seems to be acknowledged as the best and most versatile app out there for manipulating PDFs. It's updated quite frequently. If any PDF app is going to suit your needs, I'd bet on this one. Also, if no app currently does what you need, this seems to be the most likely one to add it in the future. I've had my eye on it for months, and when I get an iPad it will be the first paid app I download.

Does Goodreader actually convert an XLS or DOC into a PDF? All I can find is that it'll mark up an existing PDF.

Hmmm... I don't have the app myself yet. I don't have a need for it on my phone and haven't been able to get an iPad yet. Looking at GoodReader a little closer, it looks like it "handles" those other file types, but it's read-only.

I don't know precisely what you're planning to do with it, but the documents I would plan to use with GoodReader on an iPad are mostly MS Word docs. I would probably end up converting those to PDFs and accessing them through Dropbox. For this kind of stuff it looks like the iPad is still more of a companion device rather than a replacement for a desktop or laptop.

HBO GO is the best thing ever. I sometimes get caught with down time while working, and this app fills any void. Every episode of every series at your hands = WIN. Also can get it on your computer. I've some people having load issue, but so far so good for me.

Still looking for a good Golf GPS/Score tracker. I think i might go with golf logic. I've got my game going real good now, would like to start dialing it in even more.

Have you looked at Golfshot? You just pay for the app, no monthly or annual subscription charges. It's compatible with tons of courses - more than most of the others I checked out. I played a rounds in eight different states last year and it worked everywhere.

Now that I looked at GolfLogix again though, I see it's freemium, which seems like a good deal. When I was looking a year ago GolfLogix was charging $40 a year for a subscription, so I went with Golfshot because the cost of the app was going to pay for itself in less than a year.

used GolfLogix for free rounds and like it. Might just bite the bullet and pay the yearly fee

It looks like a pretty strong app, unlike the multitudes of shitty ones that appear to be out there. If it had been freemium a year ago it's probably the one I'd be using now.
