Sid Meier's Pirates! has been ported to iPad - it's $3.99 thru the weekend, then goes up to $6.99

Also, Civilization Revolution for iPad has dropped from $12.99 to $6.99

CivRev is pretty cool - I've been playing it for the past few months.

How's Pirates? Never played it...

The iPad version just came out today. I never played the PC/Mac version but I picked it up based on its reputation hand having liked CivRev. I'll probably give it a go sometime tonight or this weekend.

Sitting on the couch with my new iPad. What the heck is up with prices on the books in the iTunes store? Crazy!

I haven't really shopped 'em, but they're probably at least a little cheaper than a new hardcover, right?

I still prefer analog books though - Half Price Books FTW.

Bought Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride last night (two of my all time favorite board games, so they were must buys) and they are very impressive on the Pad. Really impressed by Flipboard and The Daily too.

Does anyone know why Ubisofts R.U.S.E. is not available on this yet? I figured it would be, but can't find anything about it.

Does anyone own Battleheart or Infinity Blade? I'm looking at both right now.

Any artists/doodlers here use Autodesk SketchBook? Other good drawing apps?

I definitely agree on Carcassonne. It even plays well on the iPhone, which I wasn't expecting. I haven't checked out Ticket to Ride yet, but I may have to look into it now.

There's another new board game out now called Cargo Runners that looks interesting as well. I bought when it was on sale, but haven't played it yet. I'm waiting for them to update it with a Solitaire mode similar to Carcassonne.

I own both Infinity Blade and Battleheart. I also picked both of those up when they were on sale, in anticipation of playing them once I finally finished playing Oblivion on the PS3. I think I only paid 99 cents for each at the time I bought them.

Having now done that, I started to play Infinity Blade. Graphically, it's an achievement for a mobile game. The gameplay though is rather repetitive. Your character is on rails and there is little depth to character development or combat. You pretty much tap on the next enemy on your screen, block and slash, then repeat. They built a lush envrionment around that gameplay, but you can hardly look around at all. I haven't tried the Arena mode for this game yet. As for the main game though, if you catch it on sale and think of it more as a action platformer with RPG elements rather than a true RPG, you're less likely to be disappointed.

While I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, I anticipate that I will like Battleheart better. It looks cartoonish, but it seems like many of the elements you'd expect from a good RPG are there.

Didn't realize Infinity Blade was on-rails. I'll pass on that now.

My concern with Battleheart is that it's just mass-melee with little problem solving. In the videos/demos I've seen I see lots of combat and lots of gear selection screens, but nothing else. I'm not sure if there is a deeper game behind it.

I agree, it doesn't look like there is much outside of what you described. At least there is a little more depth in character development and party selection though.

For people who like puzzle games:

Qvoid - $1.99 - Universal

This one hits all the sweet spots for me:

  • Fairly original gameplay
  • Requires more intelligence than what's required to button mash or operate a touchscreen slingshot
  • Clean, slick UI
  • Not published by Zynga
Basically, the white cube is like a rolling stamp. You have to roll it into one of the colored squares, and the white cube picks up that color on that face of the cube. Then you have to roll it so that newly colored face lands on another square of the same color. It sounds more complicated than it really is at first. There are other rules that get introduced along the way that ratchet up the difficulty. It's very reminiscent of one of my favorite iOS games - Trainyard (which I really wish would come out with an update, sequel and/or native iPad support BTW).

If you want more info or a better description, I bought it based on this review: AppAdvice - Qvoid Offers A Deep And Universal Puzzling Experience

A little more on Infinity Blade...

First of all, even though it's a "universal" app, I cannot imagine trying to play this on an iPhone's screen.

Second of all, it should be named Infinity Board: Groundhog Day with Inigo Montoya. Turns out there's just one very short map, with three different paths to the boss. Enemies all spawn in the same place. Once you get to the boss and die, you start the whole thing over - supposedly about 20 years later as your own offspring out to avenge your death. And make no mistake, you will die at the boss at least the first few times you play through the map. Most of those times with just one hit. There's no character development whatsoever - you just pound straight ahead through the game and if you play the map enough times you eventually become good enough to outlast the boss at the end. They roll credits after that and then start the whole damn thing over again, just replacing the boss with a higher level version.

Downloaded SoundPrism today. Very cool, has a free version (no MIDI controller).

Unfortunately, I think I now need another iPad with another app to play along with it.

No, I have not bought the online expansions. I own the actual board game (which was how I knew about it before seeing the app) and have played the Europe and Marklin maps before. Both are alot of fun and add some challenges.

The 1910 expansion is a good expansion once you get tired of the repetition in the route draws. But it may take many, many plays before that happens. The 1910 card pack adds-on to the basic USA map.
