Iowa QB Drew Tate (official thread)

I hope that video goes around the OSU lockeroom before the game this year...Ala the Brooks Bollinger "You build it, we own it" autograph.

Could anybody make a video of the 40 something times OSU "spanked" Iowa. I don't remember the exact year. But I do recall a year OSU was up on Iowa by at least 40 at halftime.

haha man I forgot how ugly that game was.......Tate did kick our ass and Iowa straight up out played us in every aspect. I sure how we return the favor this up coming season and pound the piss out of them. I'd have to go with Iowa/Penn St./Michigan is the teams that I really want to absolutly DRILL this year.

Iowa-for the stated reasons above

Penn St- They always take us serious, and I'm tired of hearing Joe Pa always wine about how close they come.

Michigan -Do I really need a reason?

Mili,

Wow, it was even worse than I thought it was. Coops' teams really put up some points in the mid 90s. I remember OSU was also up on Toledo 49-0 at halftime. Then there was the 70-0 and 72-0 beatings of Rice and Pitt. To bad most of those teams were lucky to put up 10 on Michigan.

Coop's teams always played a good first half but they were used to resting the second half. Cooper always scripted his first ten plays and they were usually good for two touchdowns. I never have figured that out. If Coop could draw up a complete game plan he would be unstoppable. If other coaches could figure out ten good plays they could get their own 14 points. I just can't figure out the magic of Cooper's first ten plays.

I believe Rice was 70-7. The Pitt game was funny, because I believe it was David Boston's freshman year (1996, maybe?). Ohio State was up by a million, or something, and they were in the process of taking out the second or third team players in favor of whatever scrubs Cooper could find. Boston, being a freshman, was at least third on the list of punt returners, and Cooper put him in to return a punt. The rest of the team was confused on who should be on the field, and Boston was one of eight Buckeyes on the field to return the punt. Boston returned it for a touchdown, anyway.

I also seem to remember that Ohio State didn't throw a single pass in the second half.

I have a good feeling that this will turn out to be one of those sleeper classic Big 10 games that's going to be shown on ESPN Classic for years and years.
I doubt it. After last year, this game won't even be close. We've got better talent, we're bitter about last year's loss, and we're playing in the Shoe. Not to mention the fact that I believe Iowa is TERRIBLY overrated this year. CFN is the only college football preview I've seen that gives a semi-realistic prediction of how Iowa's season will end up (they project 9-2, with road losses against us and Purdue). I even think that's a little favorable, though. And as for that sissyboy dance that Tate did against us last year, I hope Hawk or Carpenter get to him early and often.

Just heard something on ESPN Radio's Mike & Mike show that Tate participated in a charity golf tournament recently. There was a par 3 hole that if you hit a hole-in-one, then you win a car (actually, the sponser gives you 25k to spend towards the car of your choice or something like that), and he hit a hole-in-one, but Iowa's AD was there and informed him that he could not accept the prize because it would be an NCAA violation, even though the tourney was open to anyone. (maybe he was participating as a rep of the Iowa Athletic Dept. or something, I don't know)

Before being informed that he could not collect on the prize Tate told a reporter that he planned on spending the $$ on a new Harley Motorcycle.

Sucks to be him.

I heard this, too. I also heard that when he found out he couldn't win the money, he wanted to donate it to a charity, and they wouldn't let him do that, either, because it isn't even allowed to pass through his hands. I know that you have to draw the line somewhere, but I guess I don't really understand the logic. Maybe they're worried that someone will have a four-person "tournament" sponsered by two super-rich Iowa fans, and the contestants are three Iowa fans and an Iowa player. They all let the Iowa player hit again and again until he gets his hole-in-one (either real or imaginary) and then they give him his $25K. I guess if they let Tate keep his money, they'd have to discuss what's considered a "fair" golf tournament.

I don't really see a big difference between winning a prize for a hole in one and winning a prize for winning the tournament, or getting a double bogey or some other random metric. It would be difficult to distinguish between what was allowed and not, for example, if the "golf" tournament took place at a putt putt place, Tate could really rake in the dough for hole in ones :)

Good point. Or what if the "game" weren't really a sport? What if it were "Whose name is Drew Tate?"

I realize they have the rules for a reason (good reasons) but they should also exercise a little discretion every once in a while. Drew Tate should be allowed to donate that money to charity - just like what other "amateur" organizations allow.
