Game Thread Iowa at tOSU, Homecoming, Oct 19, 3:30 ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2

Some thoughts....

1. I never thought that I'd say this, but Braxton Miller is definitely a much bigger threat with his arm than with his legs. He is no longer the dynamic runner that he once was, but he still showed some flashes of brilliance, especially in the fourth quarter. On a third-and-seven play that was reminiscent of Terrelle Pryor's scramble against Iowa in 2010, Braxton rolled right, saw nothing, then reversed his field and picked up nine yards around left end. Later in the quarter he converted a third-an-eight with another clutch run, a play that was vintage Braxton Miller....

2. Unfortunately, the fumble with under two minutes left in the game was also vintage Braxton Miller. Somehow, Evan Spencer dove late into the pile and came away with the football.

3. The Ohio State defense had zero sacks, one TFL, and one turnover.

4. In the first half, Iowa converted 7 of 9 third downs; in the second half, just 1 of 4.

5. The defense made only one mistake in the second half, but that mistake was of historic proportions. Jake Duzey's 85-yard touchdown reception was tied for the fifth-longest passing play, and seventh-longest play from scrimmage, against an Ohio State defense.

6. Ohio State showed some triple-option action in the second quarter with Miller, Hyde, and Wilson. It worked well, and we should see some more of it in upcoming weeks.

7. Overall, there's just something wrong with this team. Maybe it's the lack of a killer instinct.

8. The targeting rule is a joke. The targeting rule as misinterpreted b Big Ten officials is an even bigger joke.

I almost always place more emphasis on talent than things like "leadership," but I really think in this case this team lacks leadership, especially on defense. This team lacks that player that is a coach on the field, who can diagnose what's happening and tell his teammates what they need to do, and motivate/calm them down etc

I agree there Is something wrong with this DEFENSE. Not team but defense. I think its a combo of a few things though imo. First is the coverages are garbage we should face a speed advantage against most teams and we just dony act like it. Second I personally feel some of the players in our back seven just aren't as good as we thought they were. Barnett, Roby, Bryant, Grant and perry are not names we will be talking about as buckeye greats anytime soon. Third our defensive team needs one coordinator not two and the only defensive coach I sense is pulling his own weight is vrabel.

Honestly I hope one or both of fickle or whithers gets hired away in the off season. At this point get someone who brings the heat and makes offenses wilt under great game plans. I don't know about you guys but I was ready after indiana last year to blow up our scheme on d.

I'm trying to look at this without bias. But I just don't see it. Both of my brothers agree that was the correct call by the referees. If Roby truly is targeting the guy's head, then Roby is a terrible judge of height. The TE is 6-8 inches taller than Roby, and even with "launching himself", he doesn't get above the TE's shoulder pads.

What am I missing? The guy who is paid to find it on the field sees it. The guy in the replay booth sees it. Someone explain it to me, please.

It's the exact kind of tackle I'd expect from a DB on a TE. I don't get it. He didn't lead with his head or in any way endanger the TE's head. There was no risk of a concussion on that play.
I think his biggest mistake was acting big afterwards.
That got the attention of the zebras, and he was the victim for their weekly "targeting" quota.

Re-watched the game:

It was a tale of two half's. Luckily our half was better than their half.
Braxton was brilliant.
Hyde is a beast.
The OL is the best in the B1G but I was also impressed with Iowa's OL. Very impressed.
I liked how we used Wilson. Can't wait till he breaks one. Maybe next Saturday against PSU?
I liked how we used the TE today. Would really like to see more of this.

Defense only gave up 7 pts. in the 2nd half. The TE being faster than our DB just makes me??????????????
Once we started getting pressure it was a different game. But no sacks was a concern. We will really need
to put pressure on Hackenberg or he can do some damage.
Things changed up a bit after Shutt came in. He seemed to give the DL a boost. I know that Bennett returned later on but there seemed to be a change along the DL when Shutt came in.
Iowa really hurt us with their TE's. I bet PSU is licking their chops.

Number 20. At night. In the Shoe. Is going to be SWEET!

GO BUCKS!!

250lb TEs in the flat

In my opinion, what happened was the Roby was coming in fairly low with knees bent, but just before contact, the 250 lb TE really bent his knees and dropped several inches lower, call it fetal. This leads to the irony that a flyweight CB who actually had someone hurdle over him in the last game because he was so low somehow gets called for abusing a massive TE.

According to sources, Armani Reeves runs a 4.4 40. Electronic timing probably has him in the 4.4-4.5 range. So how is he unable to catch a TE?

Because:

Following his basketball season, Duzey reported a weight of 205 pounds. He’s since put on 20 pounds but it’s not slowed him down. He ran a 4.49-second, 40-yard dash at a recent scouting combine.

http://www.scout.com/2/982693.html

We can assume that since that recorded 40 time, Duzey gained another 20 lbs. So folks, Douzey is actually pretty damn fast considering he ran a 4.5 weighing 225 lbs.

Maybe now it makes more sense.

Someone explain it to me, please.

I was outraged when I seen it at game speed. It looked like a bad call...but..If you slow motion that clip above, and pause it as the hit takes place...
you can clearly see the crown of Roby's helmet hit the TE square in the jaw area. The TE's head almost went full circle.

However..I have no idea how that could have been avoided.
The TE had his knees bent lowering himself. Roby didnt target the head. He was clearly aiming for the chest.
You can call it a personal foul...But that ejection should have been overturned because Roby did NOT target the head.

Regardless, in the games Armani has been in, he seems out of position and gets burned a lot.

And that call really pisses me off..it's like do you let the opponent catch and start running before you attempt a tackle?! I understand the "targeting" of the head, but not the hard hitting. I hate this penalty.

Well that wasn't exactly what I was responding too....but ok
