Penix deemed healthy enough to keep job as Indiana’s top QB

Doctors gave Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. the all clear to play this weekend at Western Kentucky and Hoosiers coach Tom Allen said he remains confident his star will pull himself out of an early-season funk.

Allen said Penix would remain the starter despite concerns over his low completion percentage and sudden penchant for turnovers.

“Michael Penix is our starting quarterback and I believe in him with 100% of my heart and know that our team feels the same way,” Allen said. “Again we’re going through this together and that, to me, if you falter in times of trouble, how little is your strength.”
.
.
.
Through three games, Penix has looked like anything but the breakout star of 2020. He’s completing just 48.3% of his throws with six interceptions and four TD passes. He is back after suffering three successive season-ending injuries but now has a fresh injury.

“Michael had an X-ray and an MRI on his non-throwing hand, both came back good so he should be fine physically,” Allen said. “You said it – he made some really good plays, made some really good throws that not many guys could make. But the mistakes were costly. It’s about protecting the football and he knows it.”

Vegas Lists Washington QB Michael Penix as 12/1 Heisman Odds, 3rd Overall

How did Penix go from a "marginal QB" at Indiana to a Heiman contender at Washington?....

Indiana quarterback Tayven Jackson appreciates the time he spent at Tennessee learning under two elite-level signal callers, and he believes his experience in the SEC will help him make an immediate impact with the Hoosiers. Jackson entered the transfer portal Jan. 13 and quickly made the jump to Indiana, joining his brother, Trayce Jackson-Davis, who is a veteran on the Hoosiers' men's basketball team.

"Me and (head) coach (Tom) Allen's relationship has been five-plus years, I think,"Jackson said this week. "We've had a relationship forever. Going in the portal and seeing the options, Indiana stuck out the most and it's because of coach Allen's energy, the love he has for the players and what he brings every single day, a loving culture. I've been here a week and everybody loves each other. Everybody looks out for each other and everybody wants everyone to succeed. The culture here is fantastic."

Indiana's campus is 35 minutes away from Jackson's home in Greenwood, Indiana, and he says it felt like the right choice for him.

Indiana fires offensive coordinator Walt Bell

Indiana fired offensive coordinator Walt Bell on Sunday, a day after the team failed to score more than 17 points for the third time against a major conference opponent.

Rod Carey, who had worked as a quality control coach and also as an offensive line coach since joining Indiana's staff in 2022, will take over as coordinator. Carey, an ex-Indiana offensive lineman, is the former head coach at Northern Illinois and Temple, where he went 64-50 with seven bowl appearances.

If I was a school like IU, i.e. had absolutely nothing to lose, I would have a paid app that let fans bid on the chance to call plays, live in game.

Generate some revenue, create some buzz, let your marketing people have a lot of fun at Brian Ferentz's expense...there is no downside to this. What the fuck you going to do, score less than 17 points again?

Do you think the IU fans would mind doing it again on Sundays for the Bengals?
