Rumblings that Branyan is going to start the season on the DL

and that his back is worse off than first thought

great signing........

I still don't get the Branyan signing and hope he is on the DL the whole year... just play LaPorta at 1st and Brantley in LF.

Updated depth chart...

Indians Prospect Insider: Updated 2010 Spring Training Depth Chart

Mitch Talbot listed as #5 starter. Guess that means we may finally be rid of Jeremy Sowers.

Also of note, Andy Marte is sucking up one of the backup infield spots. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. He must have pictures of Shapiro sodomizing an intern. :slappy:

The upshot of the Branyan injury (was never a fan of that signing anyway), is that LaPorta should be getting his shot at 1B. He's looked good this spring. Hopefully Branyan's coming off the DL right about the time Pronk is making his annual trip and can fill in at DH.

With low expectations going in, this should be a fairly enjoyable season as we'll get to see a lot of pieces of the future. I really like Brantley and looks like he's solidifying himself in LF. I'm excited about LaPorta at 1B. I'm curious to see what Marson can do until Santana is ready (I'm guessing later this summer). Grady looks healthy finally and Choo is IMO one of the more underrated players in MLB. AsCab is solid, Valbuena showed some promise last year.

As for the pitching, when you look at things from a different angle, it feels a lot better. Instead of fretting about them blowing a potential playoff chase, I'm just looking at it as looking at what/who we have for the future. Who knows how Jake will look after 18 months away. Fausto has looked really solid this spring, but who knows with him anymore. I'll show some optimism if he can string a couple good starts together. Masterson has great stuff, but I'm still not convinced he's be best suited for MR. Huff is what he is. Decent stuff (better than Sowers anyway), and can probably eat some innings. That link is projecting Talbot at #5, and I know jack shit about him. Probably another gas can, so I'm sure we'll see a lot of rotating going on there. Carrasco has looked solid this spring, so hopefully he can tweak some things in C-bus and work his way in there when the other detritus inevitably washes out. I'm intrigued to see how Rondon and Gomez do this year.

The bullpen simply has to be better than the last two years...I cannot imagine it being worse. Sipp looked a lot better late in the year. I like Laffey out of the BP. Joe Smith can be an effective short reliever. I hope gas can Lewis has a short leash. Perez pitched really well after an awful start and I hope he cements himself in the closer role. I'd like to put the whole Kerry Wood debacle behind us as soon as possible. That will go down as one of the worst acquisitions since jack McDowell. Hopefully Raffy Perez bounces back.

If you look at this year as a stepping stone towards a brighter future, it will be infinately more enjoyable than the past two that were filled with foolish expectations. They're gonna lose 90-95 games, I don't doubt that. There will be some comedy. That 'Major League' screen shot will make multiple appearances in this thread throughout the summer, but this organization is in better shape for the long run than they've been in 6 or 7 years since V-Mart, Pronk, Grady and Lee were breaking in. The farm system is stacked. Santana, Chisenhall, Hagadone, Knapp, Weglarz, Winston Abreu, Alex White and T.J. House are all top shelf prospects. There's a nice stockpile of second tier prospects in Carrasco, Rondon, Gomez, De La Cruz, McBride, Jordan Brown and Beau Mills. There's gonna be lumps, but in two or three years, with some breaks, this could be a very strong team.

MR. Huff is what he is. Decent stuff (better than Sowers anyway), and can probably eat some innings.

pretty much the same pitcher IMO, high ERA, high WHIP, high BAA

sowers was actually better than Huff in 09 in everything except wins

Huff in 09 5.61 ERA 1.56 WHIP .301 BAA

Sowers in 09 5.25 ERA 1.51 WHIP .288 BAA

Sowers first MLB go around was actually decent though 7-4 3.57 ERA 1.19 WHIP .252 BAA

the thing with Huff is that hitters were seeing him for the first times last year and still knocking him around, how are things going to go for him when hitters get better reads on him?

if your logic regarding huff was true, then no pitcher would actually improve during the course of their careers. they'd start out as cy young winners and devolve from there.

thats not what im trying to say........

sure he could improve

but his first season was not very encouraging

and hes not having the greatest of springs this year (5.40 ERA 22 Hits 8K/5BB in 16.2 innings)

my main point was that there isnt much of a difference between Huff and Sowers, they are what they are, soft tossing lefties who get hit a lot

And CC, a supposed future ace posted ERA's over 4.1 in 4 of his first 5 years in the bigs before becoming totally dominant.

not saying huff will be great, but to assume that what he is now is what he'll be for his career is simply faulty logic.

CC never got hit as much as Huff

in his first 5 years his highest BAA was .255 (2003) and his highest WHIP was .136 (2002)

Branyan to open season on 15-day DL | MLB.com: News

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The seemingly inevitable news came Sunday, when the Indians announced that Russell Branyan will open the 2010 regular season on the 15-day disabled list.

What that means for the composition of the Opening Day roster won't be known until Thursday, when manager Manny Acta is expected to announce his decision on all the Tribe's remaining spring battles.

Branyan is supposed to be the Tribe's first baseman this season, but he won't be starting the season opener on April 5 in Chicago because of a herniated disk in his lower back. That leaves Matt LaPorta at first base and left field -- the spot LaPorta is slated to occupy, once Branyan's aboard -- wide open for Austin Kearns, Michael Brantley or Trevor Crowe.

Sorry haven't been keeping up much on this thread but I don't understand why they are keeping Marte or can he play second base. I have heard that Valbuena has not been hitting very well and I thought they might keep Mark G. as their backup second baseman. I really can't see them carrying that many utility infielders with so many guys in the bullpen.

I am also someone befuddled as to why we keep all our players in the minor league when they probably could be used as trade bait. I mean we have a pretty young starting lineup as it is now so why keep all of the younger players. I know that we will need another third baseman sometime in the very near future and pitching is always needed but I think we are for a few years at the other positions so why keep younger players down in the minors when you can't get something for them now when they have value.

Also, why didn't they give Branyan if physical before giving him all of that money before signing him. Hopefully, this team will come out of spring ball ready to play baseball like the other teams managed by a good old Wedge:(

With Branyan on bed rest for his third trimester I imagine Mark G will make the club for now...he has hit well in the spring. Luis V hasn't been able to hit a fish with a boat oar, and when he has actually swung the bat he did it like he was afraid he might kill some gnats, so I don't know...it ain't looking that good in the middle right now.
