Tribe claims Hernandez off waivers | indians.com: News

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Indians added a new body to their middle-infield utility race Wednesday, claiming Anderson Hernandez off waivers from the Mets.

To make room for Hernandez on the 40-man roster, the Tribe designated Brian Bixler for assignment. Bixler, acquired in a minor trade with the Pirates in January, had ostensibly been competing for a bench spot with the Indians, but now it's Hernandez in the mix.

The 27-year-old Hernandez hit a combined .251 with 15 doubles, four triples, three homers, 37 RBIs and 39 runs for the Nationals and Mets last year. He began the season on the 15-day disabled list, appeared in 77 games with the Nats, then was traded to the Mets in August.

In 186 career Major League games, the switch-hitting Hernandez has hit .245 with 20 doubles, five triples, four homers and 57 RBIs. He has played 108 games at second base, 54 at shortstop and one in left field.

The Indians are looking for a middle infielder who can potentially spell second baseman Luis Valbuena against certain left-handed pitchers. The right-handed-hitting Mark Grudzielanek and Luis Rodriguez are also competing for the job.

Cleveland Indians' Kerry Wood out 6 to 8 weeks with back strain - ESPN

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Kerry Wood's second season with Cleveland is already in setback mode.

The Indians' closer, who has a long history of medical issues, could miss two months with a strained muscle in his upper back, an injury that was not initially believed to be serious.
Trainer Lonnie Soloff said Saturday that an MRI exam revealed a "moderate" strain. He said Wood will be out a minimum of six weeks.
In news that is equally surprising, water is wet.

What's shocking is that he made it through last year relatively unscathed. This of course means he'll pitch approximately 11 2/3 innings this year.

Does that mean he'll have a chance to get 12 saves? That's probably more than some wags have predicted the team will have this season anyway!

Good news...maybe?

Cleveland Indians vs. Chicago Cubs - Recap - March 22, 2010 - ESPN
MESA, Ariz. -- Fausto Carmona threw six scoreless innings to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 9-2 on Monday.
Carmona allowed two hits, both by Alfonso Soriano, and walked none. The big right-hander was 19-8 with a 3.06 ERA in 2007 before going 13-19 with a 5.89 ERA over the next two years. He has been plagued by wildness but he has issued only two walks in 13 spring innings.

Probably walks 6 and gives up 8 in his first start, anyway. :(
